US Travel Ban: Why These Seven Countries?

by Neha Sah Digital Marketing Manager

President Donald Trump gives order that banned visiting into the United States for citizens from seven countries for 90 days that country is Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The main motive for restrictions were part of wide ranging immigration controls which also suspended refugee arrivals. It allows that existing restrictions in place during the Obama administration informed Mr Trump's list.

These countries were already known as "countries of concern" after a law passed by a Republican-led Congress in 2015 altered a visa admissions programme.

The Visa Waiver Program is mandatory citizens from 38 countries to visit the US for 90 days without a visa ( ESTA USA VISA). The UK, France and Germany are countries allowed in under the waiver programme. Visitors online apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (Esta).

In December 2015 a law - created by senators from both parties, and that is supported and signed by the White House - that removed waiver benefits for foreign nationals who had visited certain countries since March 2011 because of that country is identified as having a terrorist organisation with a significant presence in the area, or the country was deemed a "safe haven" for terrorists.

After Somalia, Libya, and Yemen were added to the list in February 2016, Mr Trump's order the "countries of concern" were the seven named in the list.

According to the restrictions, citizens or nations who had been eligible for the waiver programme and had entered one of those seven countries in the time period were forced to Apply for US Visa ESTA.

The Obama administration passed the Visa Waiver Program for Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 after the terrorist attacks in Paris November 2015.

In a statement on 29 January, President Trump said that his policy was "similar" to an Obama order but "banned visa for refugees from Iraq".
