Connecting point

In a vehicle’s transmission system, output shaft is in the gearbox. But differential pinion shaft and propeller shaft are not present in a single line. Hence, universal joint is used to make connection between them. Torque transmission is permitted at a particular angle. As the vehicle moves, this angle changes constantly. It is termed as hook joint or Cardan joint.

Purpose

Differential tends to rise and fall while the vehicle moves on uneven roads. Simultaneously, propeller shaft rotates. This causes changing of angles by the propeller shaft. Know the types

Constant Velocity type: This type allows driven and driving shafts tend to move around at constant velocity. The reason is that two joints acts upon same angles. Typically, such joints are used in front wheel driven (axle) vehicles. Speed variation between driven and driving shaft exhibits difficulty in steering system, thereby causing excessive tire wear.

Ball Trunnion type: This can be stated to be slip and universal joints present in the same assembly.  There is present ball type head fastened to drive shaft or propeller head’s end. Cross or pin shaft pressed through the shaft end, thereby forming ‘T’ shape. Two steel balls, in this pin are firmly fitted. Balls may axially move in direction.

Cross type: There is present a crosspiece (spider) and two Y shaped yokes. The first is attached to driven-shaft and the other with driving shaft. Four arms or trunnion is present in the cross piece connected with the yokes’ both ends. Each arm is provided with four bearings that allow yoke movement around trunnion.
