Understanding Hail Damage Repair

As a homeowner, you always have some worries in the back of your head that something will go wrong and damage your home. From broken furnaces to destructive storms, the list seems almost never ending of the possibilities of costly repairs that your home may need. Hail storms in particular may not seem severe but they can cause thousands of dollars-worth of damage to your Denver home and require hail damage repair.

What Is Hail

Hail is a type of precipitation similar to rain that originates in clouds and falls from the sky as a storm. However, instead of being a liquid like rain, hail falls as frozen ice. The hail pellets in Denver can range from pea sized to pieces as big as a softball! Since large hailstones can fall at speeds of over 100 miles per hour, imagine the kind of damage they can do to your home.

How it Can Damage Your Roof

Rooftops are the first line of defense for your home and typically take the brunt of damage from storms that deliver rain, hail and wind. The most common damage caused by hail include bruising, cracking and loss of asphalt granules.

•    Bruising of the Shingles

Large hailstones can cause dents in your shingles that may lead to deterioration. The risk here is that once a shingle has deteriorated or has been compromised, it can allow precipitation to leak into your home which will cause even more damage. Sometimes you cannot see dents in your shingles from the ground, so you may actually have to feel the shingles to check for dents or divots.

•    Cracking of the Shingles

Especially with large hail stones, a hail storm can leave cracking in your shingles. Cracking will typically appear as a circle which indicates that it was caused by a hail stone. Just like bruising, cracking can lead to the shingle deteriorating and leakage into your home.

•    Loss of Asphalt Granules

The rough texture of shingles is because of the asphalt granules that cover the substrate. This provides protection to the surface below and adds an extra layer of protection against leaks. A bad hailstorm can knock off granules from the asphalt and leave the black substrate exposed to the elements. This can also lead to deterioration and roof leaks.

How You Can Fix the Damage

After a particularly rough hail storm that was either long lasting or had large hailstones, you should call a Denver area roofer to assess any potential damage. Since it is hard to see hail roof damage from the ground, it is necessary to have someone go up onto your roof. It can be dangerous to try on your own and is best left to roofing professionals.

When damage is found, the roofer can either patch or replace the damaged shingles and keep your roof safe from future storms. If you allow a damaged roof to sit for too long without getting hail damage repair, then the damage will just continue to get worse. To save yourself money in the long run, always have your roof checked following a storm and have any hail damage repairs done right away.
