UFC 2020: The Latest on Combat Sports This Year

by Richard Robinson SEO Specialist

UFC is one of the first events to come back after getting hit by the Coronavirus pandemic. Dana White promised an immediate return; the reason why most sports sites instantly got flooded with combat sports news. The UFC said that its comeback would come in the form of a continuation of the fight series scheduled for May 9, 13, and 17.

And so it did.

The UFC 249 was successfully kicked off last May 9 at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida where Justin Gaethe claimed the interim lightweight title in the main event against Tony Ferguson. This win might just potentially earn him a card against former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who previously turned down the match for health concerns.

The two succeeding fight cards were just as epic. In what seemed to be the fight that brought back the intense MMA action we’ve all been missing, Glover Teixeira punched a tooth out of Anthony Smith, which got him the belt in UFC Fight Night. And the intensity got even fiercer when Alistair Overeem pulled himself from the scraps and turned the fight upside down against Walt Harris in UFC Fight Night 176.

Everything seemed to work according to plan, leaving MMA fans even hungrier for combat sports news as to whether or not the UFC will continue on with the road it has taken.

What’s next for UFC 2020?

Lots of rumors about the next set of UFC fight cards have been making the rounds recently, one of them being a continuation of where Justin Gaethe and Khabib Nurmagomedov left off. However, Dana White hasn’t talked to the media about the next steps the UFC is going to make for the remainder of the fight season. Tyron Woodley was set to take on Gilbert Burns is a scheduled event on May 30, but there’s no confirmation for that yet.

What we do know, though, is that the UFC started promoting UFC 250 - its next PPV event - to be “coming in June”. The UFC previously announced that the card would feature featherweight defender Amanda Nunes against Felicia Spencer. But there’s still no word out if this is confirmed. Several sports news sites and sportsbook blogs like Nitrogen Sports News are constantly covering the latest on UFC 2020, so it’s best to stay in loop with these sources.
