Type Of Explosives That Pose The Greatest Threats To Armoured Cars Across The Country

by JCBL Armouring JCBL Armouring Solutions

For most people who seek the protection of armoured vehicles, getting caught in an explosion is the last thing they expect. That is what the attackers often count on: the element of surprise. It is something many armoured car manufacturers in India often overlook. More focused on protecting the vehicle from riots and bullet impacts, you might not see many bulletproof Audi cars in India that can withstand serious explosions.

This is why it is important to understand the various explosive threats that armoured cars in India can face. This will help you prepare better for any situation that may arise in the future. As only a few premium armoured vehicle manufacturers in the country, like JCBL Armouring Solutions, are capable of making your daily driver ready for an explosion, here are some of the most common explosive threats that your armoured car may encounter.

l  IEDs

Out of all the explosive threats, these are most likely to go off on your next important political visit or when you are strolling through a dangerous area unknowingly. IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices are usually home made and don’t require a lot of material to put together. You can build one yourself using simple household items. Although most of them are usually designed to just disable a vehicle, many encountered in combat theaters across the Middle East have been able to take down tanks wholesale. Most armoured car manufacturers in India would advise only an MS sheath flooring. However, it is also a good idea to reinforce the hinges, engine bay, and trunk to deter their explosive effect as well.

l  Shaped Charges

Popular ever since the 1960s, shaped charges using physical dynamics to increase the impact of the explosion on the vehicle. They are usually set up on the ground to maximize their directive energy towards the armoured car. When the explosion happens, the shape of the device collapses, directing a high energy particle, usually a metal, towards the intended target. The charge can be set off remotely or by using a pressure plate or trip wire. To counter such a threat, it is best to use hard plating on the bottom of the vehicle with sharp curves to direct the energy of the blast away.

l  Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs)

Whereas shaped charges can be dangerous on their own, imagine that flying across the air from a distant attacker. Spooky, right? Most of us relate Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) with the movie ‘Black Hawk Down’, with such devices depicted as being able to take down helicopters. These have seen widespread use with extremist groups across the world. To counter such a threat from a private car, it is best to put on angular armour all around the vehicle.

l  Cluster Warheads

Unlike other explosives, cluster warheads at set to detonate at a certain distance from the target. The explosion can then occur in one of two ways. Either a small explosion first disperses the main charges over the target which then explode on impact, or a larger explosion takes place that sends large fragments of hot metal towards the target. To resist the impact of these bad boys, you are better off with an armouring package that focuses on absorbing the impact of an explosion rather than deflect it. Kevlar or MS sheaths across the body shell is something popular with bulletproof Audi cars in India for the same.

l  HEAT

HEAT stands for ‘High-Explosive Anti-Tank’. If you ever find yourself at the business end of one of those, you have angered some very serious people. These warheads are extremely hard to get a hold of and even harder to transport in sensitive countries. Not many armoured vehicle manufacturers have a sure-shot cure for them. They work by exploding a primary charge to weaken the armour and make way for a secondary charge just milliseconds after a breach. Only the latest technology such as explosive reactive armour can counter such a threat. And since it is still in prototype phase, your best chance is to maneuver your vehicle out of the way.

And that’s all folks! We hope you learned a lot about the dangers of explosions through this piece. Remember, there is no way a vehicle cannot be disabled with enough firepower. So, it is best to prepare for the worst. No amount of money in the world is worth more than your life, especially when people of your community or employees of your corporation need you at the helm.
