Abstract

Ultimately, this mental stress leads to numerous psychological disorders. When the emotions of people get hurt then he/she feels betrayed, and left out. Betrayal means Disloyalty i.e., action of betraying someone. A person feels like he/she is losing his/her mind and this feeling hauls you towards the negativity. In today’s world, almost all are suffering from mental stress some at lower and some at higher level. Here, in this article we will talk about a specific type of stress, i.e., Post Betrayal Syndrome and how to manage it with Ayurvedic herbs and herbal formulations.

Introduction

Post betrayal syndrome is a deep shattering mental health condition after getting betrayed by someone. Betrayal is when someone doesn’t fulfill his commitments and also the expectations of the concerned person. If we are connected emotionally with anyone like husband/wife, boyfriend/ girlfriend, siblings, etc. then we expect things from that person. These expectations get anguished when they are not fulfilled and the individual feels betrayed. This leads their way to overthinking and begging for sympathy from others.

Betrayal could be in any relationship, especially where there are partnerships and related expectations say husband-wife, girlfriend-boyfriend, brother-sister, business partners and others, whatever. Once someone gets betrayed by their partner, it becomes difficult to trust again on anyone. Betrayal might be due to extramarital affairs, trust issues, overambitious nature of partner(s), domestic violence, backstabbing, deceiving, child abuse, etc.

  1. Extramarital affairs- Getting married means being with someone in every situation for a lifetime. But when time passes most of the couple’s feel glitches in their married life and their happily ever after leads to soreness. Then there is the arrival of a third one which steers their way to extramarital affairs.
  2. Trust issues: - If there are trust issues in any relationship, then this leads to misunderstanding and this misunderstanding develops flaws in relationships.
  3. Overambitious nature- The overambitious nature of one partner leads their way to clashes in a relationship.
  4. Domestic violence- It includes physical, emotional, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, etc.
  5. Backstabbing- It’s also a type of betrayal which includes disloyal actions to harm someone like a friend or colleague.
  6. Deceiving- A false or mistaken impression on someone also leads to betrayal.

How does it affect the Immune system and Physical & Mental body?

Now, Let’s discuss how betrayal affects our physical and mental health. In Ayurveda, Acharaya sushruta mentioned the definition of health as in below verse:

This ancient verse states that the Samdosha (balanced three vitals of body i.e., vata, pitta and kapha), Samagni (good digestive power), Samdhatu (balanced bodily tissues), malkriya (evacuation of urine and stool), Prasannatmaindiyamann (Happy soul, senses and mind), makes a Healthy Individual.

emotional disturbance

WHO also mentioned the definition of health, as:

“Health is defined as physical, mental and social well being of a person.”

Thus, we can say mental health plays an important role in life and leads their way in the cause of the disease. If we are mentally upset then it's laborious to concentrate and perform any physical activity. Betrayal makes our mind work in an opposite way. The centre of fear ignites and produces symptoms like anxiety, stress, hyper vigilance etc and changes the ability to regulate mood and make intelligent decisions. The fear centre hampers normal functioning and the person experiences complex, dynamic and multidimensional betrayal trauma. Thus, it affects the physical health and debilitates the immunity of the body.

Ayurvedic view

We can correlate post betrayal syndrome with Manas roga. This occurs due to vitiation of mansik Dosha i.e. raja and tama Dosha.

The main causes of manas roga are

  1. Asatmeyaindriyartha sanyoga (inappropriate connection between Soul, Mind and Senses)
  2. Pragyapradha (Manual mistakes done by an individual)
  3. Parinam (Result of misdeeds)

Symptoms of Manas Roga

Following are the Symptoms of Manas Roga

  • Bhaya (fear)
  • Santrasa (suffocation)
  • Asahishnuta (Intolerance)
  • Mana ki shobha (sad or ill feeling)
  • Avyavasthita chitta (use of bad or rude words while talking)
  • Mansik bhava utpatti (expression of various emotions and activities)
  • Bhava vibransh (emotional disturbance)
  • Jeevan se palayan (suicidal tendency)
  • Bhram (illusions)
  • Vibrama (Delusions)

Chikitsa of Manas roga (Treatment)

Treatment can be done in three parts

  1. Daiv Vyap Ashrya chikitsa
  2. Yukti Vyap Ashrya chikitsa
  3. Satvavjaya chikitsa

Let's discuss in detail about these three

Daiv Vyap Ashrya Chikitsa:- It includes the following points

  • Chanting of mantras repeatedly
  • Use of gemstones and disease pacifying drugs.
  • Doing worship daily for the non-aggression of the disease.
  • Nitya Niyam karna (following Healthy daily Regimen) as mentioned in patanjalya yoga sutra
  • Atonement
  • Fasting
  • Pilgrimage

2. Yukti Vyap Ashrya Chikitsa:- In this, treatment is done in three different ways:

Antha parimarjana chikitsa – Treatment can be done in two types i.e. Sanshodhan and Sanshaman Chikitsa. Sanshodhan includes panchakarma procedures like vamana, virechan, basti, nasya, and raktamokshan. With the help of these procedures, detoxification of the body is done. In San Shaman chikitsa, herbs and herbal formulations are given to the patient like

  • Smriti sagar rasa
  • rasraj rasa
  • chaturbhuja rasa
  • Ashwagandha churna
  • Shankhpushpi churna
  • Jyotishmati churna
  • Arogyavardhini vati
  • Brahmi vati
  • mahakalyana ghrita
  • Brahmi ghrita
  • chawanprash, avleha, etc.

Bahir parimarjana chikitsa- This type of treatment comprises of procedures like massage, oleation therapy, therapeutic sweating, pralepa, avganahana, etc.

Shastra pranidhana - Shastra karma is indicated in some of the manas rogas. Chedana (excison), bhedana (incision), Sewan (Suturing), vyadhan (puncturing), prachann (type of bloodletting), patana (beating), Aeshan (probing), etc. are the types of shatra karma

3. Satvavjaya chikitsa

This treatment is mainly used for the management of manas roga. The ultimate goal is to increase the satva of the patient by detaching him/her from unpleasant subjects and influencing the patients towards the pleasant subjects.

Further, the patient with Post Betrayal Syndrome is guided with some lifestyle modifications which include

  1. Waking up early in the morning (Brahma Muhurat jagran)
  2. Taking an adequate amount of sleep i.e. 7-8 hours. Avoid day sleeping (divashayan) and Ratri jagran (waking during night)
  3. Yogasana and pranayama – Some mind relaxing asanas such as savasana, makarasana are advised. They can also do surya namaskar, if possible.
  4. Pranayama - It’s a breathing exercise. Pranayama must be done in order to keep the mind calm and stress free. It includes Nadishodhan Pranayam i.e., anulom vilom, kapalbhati, sheetali, ujjayi, etc.
  5. Daily walk for 2 kilometers in Morning and Evening hours, preferably in open places and on grass & mud, like a garden.
  6. Indulge in some outdoor activities to distract the mind.
