Travel to My tho in the heart of Mekong delta, Vietnam

It's the closest Mekong Delta City to Ho Chi Minh City, and for this reason Vietnam Tours on a 10 days almost come here for day trips. Having spent two hours in My Tho, they can go home and say " I've seen the Mekong River ".
Being so close to booming Ho Chi Minh City, one would expect My Tho to have profiled handsomely from the new economic reforms. Sadly, this is not the case - My tho is one of the poorest cities in the Mekong Delta region, though it is said to have the richest government and one of the strictest police forces.
The problem begins and end with the Tien Giang's people's Committe, reputed to be the most corrupt in Vietnam. Most forms of private enterprise are banned, For most tourists, this means that tourist facilities are government-run, in shoddy condition and overpriced.
My tho was founded in the 1680s by Chinese refugees fleeing Taiwan for political reasons. The Chinese are virtually all gone now, having been drivien out in the late 1970s when their property was seized by the government. The economy - whats left of it - is based on fishing and the cultivation of rice, coconuts, bananas, mangoes, longans and citrus fruits.

My tho, which sprawls along the bank of the northernmost branch of the Mekong river, is laid out in a fairly regular grid pattern. The bus station is several Kilometers west of the town. Coming from the bus station, you enter My tho which turns into Nguyen Trai district.
