Tourism of Gujarat
by Dherya Tyagi Travelling to WorldThe tourism of Gujarat has great diversity and potential. It
has a rich history and culture, which are reflected in the form of various
tourist attractions. It is a state of mighty forts and palaces, exquisite
handicrafts, colourful festivities and exotic wildlife, all of which add to the
state's awesome tourist appeal. Whether you are coming for a religious trip or
a wild sojourn, Gujarat can floor you with endless possibilities to explore.
The Dwarkadhish Temple, on the holy city of Dwarka, Somnath
Temple(which was restored after being decimated by Mahmud Ghazni), Palitana
Temples of the Jains, Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar, Shankheshwar Jain
Temple near Ahmedabad are not only frequented by pilgrims, but also by the
general tourists, who even if are not religiously inclined, can't help marvel
at their architecture. They are essential visits in the religious tourism of
Gujarat.
After the introspective religious dips, you may opt for
bringing out your intrepid adventurous streak, and when in Gujarat, you will
find ample opportunities to do so. The state has four national parks and 21
sanctuaries to explore its varied wildlife.
At the Gir Forest National Park, you can see the Asiatic
lions in their wild glory, which unfortunately is the only remaining abode of
these great cats. It is a feather in the cap of Gujarat tourism. You can also
visit the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, located in that wonderful eco-system
called Rann of Kutch. Spread across 4954 sq km, it is the largest wildlife
sanctuary in India, where you can explore these enigmatic and endangered
creatures, who are as(s) well as wild. Then there is also the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary that helps
you meet some of the most charismatic feathered species that live on the
planet. The Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary sets your rendezvous with the
unbelievable sloth bears. A visit to the Marine National Park and the Velavadar
Blackbuck Sanctuary can also broaden your wild view.
For history lovers, Gujarat is a treat of sorts. Here you
can find excavation of the ruined cities of Lothal and Dholavira, which
resonate with the enigma of the long-lost Indus Valley Civilization. Visits to Pavagadh
Fort, Dabhoi Fort and the Uparkot Fort can truly become historic incidents in
your memory. By exploring the labyrinth of their passageways can be your own
search for the past… and if lucky, you can end up with your own interesting
discoveries. Sabarmati Ashram of Gandhi can be your date with the modern
history. Jami Masjid, Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum,
Maharaja Sayajirao Museum, Durbar Hall Museum are other important tourist attractions of Gujarat; a state of many colours
and hues.
Gujarat celebrates major festivals all the year round. The
festivals of Navaratri i.e. the Nine Nights and Maker Sankranti i.e. Kite
Festival are the most popular of them all. The other festivals include Diwali,
Kutch Desert Festival, Shivratri, and Janmashtami. These festivals project the
most diverse cultures of Gujarat, and can be easily included in the tourist
itineraries of the state.
