Tornado Survival Means Having a Plan and Taking Action

Many people have no idea what it like to go though a tornado let alone even consider the possibility. However if you live in a area that is prone to tornadoes, tornado survival is a concern. Tornado survival is a concern especially for those people who live in tornado alley. This zone includes the states of Texas, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.

A tornado survival plan requires a number of things. First it is a good idea to have an urban survival kit in your home or office. Your urban survival kit will provide you with water, food, heat and shelter if needed.

When a tornado is about to strike there will be some warning signs. Tornado survival requires you know this. Knowing these signs is part of the tornado survival plan. You will hear a sound like a freight train or you will see a circular cloud rotation. These warning signs mean its time to take action. If you are in your home you need to get the safest place possible, FAST. Take action. Get into the basement away from windows. In the basement crouch under a strong table or desk face down, Cover yourself with blankets, sleeping bags or a mattress. You need to protect yourself from flying debris. If you have no basement to hide in find a hallway or closet near the center of the lowest floor in your home and crouch face down covering the back of your head with your hands and cover yourself up .

If you are outside get away from any cars or trucks. If you are in one get out. A tornado can toss these around and it could become a projectile. Take shelter in the basement of any near by building. If that isn't possible avoid being near trees and find a low lying area of ground. Lie face down with your hands protecting the back of your neck. Never take shelter in an underpass.
