Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world as it is home to the18,330 islands, 6,000 of them inhabited. Indonesia consists of 167 active volcanoes, much more than any other country. It is really interesting that being the world’s largest archipelago, still beaches are a prime highlight. Aside from the very famous places like Bali and Lombok, there are many other hidden treasures in off-the-beaten-track locations. 1. Bali

Bali is one of the world’s ideal island destinations and one which always wins travel awards. The picturesque landscape, rugged coastlines, clean beaches, lush rice terraces and volcanic hillsides all gives a perfect backdrop to its colorful, deeply spiritual and extraordinary Hindu culture. The incredible blend of welcoming people, a fascinating visual culture filled with spirituality and mesmerizing beaches with great surfing and diving have made Bali the most favorite tourist destination in Indonesia.

2. Komodo National Park

The Komodo National Park is encompassing both Rinca Island and Komodo Island and a number of smaller islets, being most celebrated as the habitat of the Komodo Dragons, large carnivorous monitor lizards that can touch up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length. The reptiles move freely over the islands, and tourists fall on experienced tour guides for attractions and to keep them safe. Komodo National Park is also celebrated as scuba diving destination.

3. Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta is a vibrant city of around 500,000 people and the prime tourist destination on Java, due to its proximity to the celebrated temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. Yogyakarta lies in one of the most seismically active parts of Java and has thus frequently causing earthquakes and volcano eruptions.

The Tanjung Puting National Park is situated on the Borneo Island in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. Wildlife offers gibbons, macaques, clouded leopards, sun bears, pythons, crocodiles and everyone’s favourite orangutans. Unfortunately illegal logging and forest clearing for agricultural uses at the park are a prime threat.

6. Flores Island

Flores Island is found at the east of Sumbawa and to the west of Lembata in Nusa Tenggara with plenty of natural and cultural sights. The popular attraction in Flores is the Kelimutu volcano caldera, including three lakes fed by volcanic gas that change color according to the amount of oxidation in the water. Flores also has increasing eco-tourism industry, where travelers can be at the traditional villages, stay with local families and try activities like bird watching and trekking.

7. Torajaland

Torajaland (Tana Toraja) is known as a highland region of South Sulawesi, the place of the Toraja people. Torajans are known for their huge peaked-roof houses called tongkonan and splendid but gruesome funeral rites. After someone’s death, the body is put - often for several years - until the actual funeral ceremony, that can last for several days. The body is then finally buried in a tiny cave or in a hollow tree. The largest funerals are usually organized in the dry-season months of July and August, but there are funerals year-round.

8. Bukit Lawang

Bukit Lawang is a little village located at the eastern side of Gunung Leuser National Park around 90 kilometers northwest of Medan, the capital city of North Sumatra. A rehabilitation center for orangutans was established here in 1973. The important purpose is to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population because of hunting and deforestation. With an incredible selection of treks into the centre of the jungle, whitewater adventures and some of the best chances to watch wild orangutan in the world, Bukit Lawang will make your soul happier.

9. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is remarkable for its captivating scenery of a vast, ancient volcanic crater and an array of spectacular volcanoes that have emerged from it. The park is known after two mountains, Mount Semeru, Mount Bromo and the Tengger people who lived in that area. Semeru is the highest mountain in Java also Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. The smouldering cone of Bromo placed in a sea of volcanic sand, covered by the towering cliffs of the crater’s edge. 

10. Lombok

Lombok is most of the times is compared to its closest neighbor: Bali. The island has the same kind of charming serene beaches and volcanic scenery as Bali tour packages from India, with less commercialism and lesser crowds making it one of the finest destinations to be in Indonesia. The island’s northern area is dominated by the massive volcano of Gunung Rinjani, and trekking at least part of the way up is the reason why many travelers head to Lombok. The three Gili Islands, just off the northwest coast are the renowned beach destination.
