Toddlers Make Great Subjects For Photoshoots

by Somya Sood Baby, Kids, Maternity, Family Photography, Delhi N

Toddler and kids photography should be a fun and active time, with the child busy with their favorite activity and relaxed, happy and cheerful for the best results. It is ideal to have the professional photographer visit a few times, to get to know the child and the expected behavior before the kids' photoshoot to create a level of comfort during the session, for the best shots.

Portraits

Portraits are a good way to take full-frontal shots, and well-reputed and experienced photographers often take great portrait shots of the child, that are spontaneous and candid. Shooting for children is a pleasant and fun experience when done right, and choosing the right lighting can make a big difference in the final outcome. Catchlights are a very important aspect of good portraits, creating a sense of depth in the photo. Catchlights also emphasize the eyes in the portraits, giving it an almost textural quality.

Natural lighting

Many kids photographers in Gurgaon, and other locations in the NCR will conduct an outdoor shoot, where the child is in a park or a garden. Natural lighting is ideal and many photographers shoot in the early mornings or early evenings for the best light. The location of the shoot should be shady, with ample light to create soft lighting.

Natural light for the shoots, create a pleasing effect, highlighting the best features with the soft glow and blurred shadows, which is why most photographers prefer the early morning and the evening light. A flashlight does not always reap the best results, and flashes are notorious for startling toddlers and children, with some crying due to the sudden brightness; not just that flashlight creates sharp lines and shadows, which does not create a pleasing effect overall.

Right lighting and child engagement

Lighting is the most crucial aspect of photography and sometimes, an outdoor shoot may not be possible. To create the perfect environment indoors, photographers can often use diffused light to create the right light setting. Working indoors can be challenging with toddlers, as they have short attention spans, quickly becoming bored with the restricted environment of an indoor site. To overcome this challenge, communicating with the toddlers and having a toy, an activity or game to distract them, along with the mother is required to maintain the balance. Children can become disoriented in new environments and visiting the location of the photoshoot ahead of time, a few times, can put the child at ease.

Parents should prepare for the shoot ahead of time, with a few visits to the location of the shoot, if indoor, and pack some fun games that the toddler enjoys, to ensure that they can maintain interest during the length of the shoot; the child should be well-rested and not hungry as the shoot is doomed, if the child is tired and cranky, making him or her, a rather unwilling subject of the shoot.

Outdoor shoots do not have this challenge, as children are easily distracted outside; building a good rapport with the child and creating an enjoyable environment are the most important aspects for kids photography and for the best shots.
