Tips, tricks and dog supplies to care for an ill pet

by Joseph Smith Content Writer
What do you do when your pet falls ill with a minor fever? You might have called your pet’s vet countless times to check the causes for your dog’s regular sneezes and periodic minor illness. However, every time you think you have gotten rid of the viral fever, it resurrects to affect your canine friend’s health. Here are some precautionary tips to keep your pet safe from frequent minor illness.

Catch the Symptoms

Dogs are susceptible to various types of fevers like tick fever, rocky mountain fever and valley fever. There are certain key symptoms to look out for if you suspect your pet is under the weather. Your pet’s body temperature may be quite high without you realising it. Check its body temperature behind the ears and near the nose, as they reflect any change in body temperature. A rise in body temperature may result in your pet being lethargic and utterly disinterested in daily activities. Its weakness will be very visible, and you will find it resting on its pet bed for long periods at a stretch. Its appetite will reduce and its heart rate and respiratory rate will significantly increase. In such a scenario, consult your pet’s vet immediately to keep a check on its health.

Treat Them Right!

Apart from the course of treatment provided by your vet, here are a few things to keep in mind when you have a sick pet at home. While monitoring its fever, if the pet’s body temperature rises above 105 F, apply some cool water around its ears, feet and fur and fan it for some time. Make sure you keep your pet cool and dry at all times. Keep your dog hydrated as much as possible and ensure that it drinks a lot of water. Remember your pet is ill and might be a little grumpy, so above all be kind, caring and gentle when interacting with your furry friend.

Helpful Precautions

Prevention is better than cure and with a few simple pre-emptive measures; you can avoid a situation where your pet is constantly troubled with minor fevers, cough and cold. Implement the following precautions to keep your pet safe from minor ailments.

Vaccinate your pet periodically. Giving your pet the necessary vaccination after a change in season is recommended, as this is the time when your canine companion is most susceptible to viral fevers and infections. Providing them with the right diet helps them maintain their immunity and build resistance to viral and bacterial attacks. Apart from this, keep your dog supplies clean and dry to avoid contamination and do remember to wash the dog bed regularly to reduce chances of infection.

It is never a good sight to see your usually cheerful pet unnaturally calm and mellow due to a fever. Check for the symptoms, treat it right and follow these basic tips to keep your pet healthy and happy.
