Tips for Teachers to get Their Students Adept in Grade2 Arithmetic:

by Adeel Qureshi SEO Expert & Writer

Grade2 arithmetic comprises of mainly of the operations of addition and subtraction. For good reason these two operations form the basis of all other mathematics operations that the students will encounter in their future study of the vast field of mathematics. Multiplication is, in the simplest sense, adding over and over again, and division is repetitive subtracting. These four operations form the core of all mathematical concepts including algebra which is considered extremely important in the curriculum of most schools and is taught to pupils in early grades. Traversing back to the roots brings us to the two operations that are considered for granted and so easy by teachers and pupils alike that they are not practiced as much as they should be – add and subtract. Teachers should encourage their pupils to make deliberate effort to include these two basic operations when they practice math at home or in school.

It may seem like a waste of time to those students who are proficient but they should realize that the extra practice will enable them to do tricky arithmetic quickly and accurately and in many cases, they will be able to do it in their heads, without even having to resort to pen and paper. The weaker pupils, who should be the focus of the teacher, will of course benefit greatly from the additional time they spend on addition and subtraction: to practice math is the only way to become proficient in it. These Grade2 pupils will be boosting their ability to concentrate and solve problems unconsciously as they attempt the arithmetic problems at home.

It goes without saying that each Grade2 math class should have at least fifteen minutes dedicated to math practice. The teacher should, in these fifteen minutes, provide especially interesting or tricky problems of addition and subtraction to challenge the pupils and enable them to evaluate their arithmetic skills. Also, the teacher should discuss questions that pupils had difficulty in attempting at home. This brief amount of time will be more than enough for the teacher to hone the arithmetic skills of their pupils – it won’t be a large enough interval to affect the actual class topic for the day.

If this is done at the start of the class, it will serve a role quite similar to that of warm up exercises before hitting the gym – the pupils’ minds will switch to a mode ready to process mathematical concepts, this will make the teacher’s job easy and they will be able to impart the contents of the lecture much more effectively to the students whose minds are set in mathematical gear. Given enough time and concentration, even the weaker students will become reasonably skilled in basic arithmetic, sufficient to see them through high school. The teacher can’t turn everyone into an Einstein, but they can make sure that their pupils are ready to pursue whatever they want to in their practical lives.
