As a first time exchange student, you may have a million questions going through your head. It is one of the most challenging situations for someone who is used to living in their comfort zones. However, with right kind of guidance, you will not only be able to sail through the experience but also be good at it.

So if you are wondering How to Be a Foreign Exchange Student, then these tips will help you!

  • Don't be culture shocked
When you chose to be a part of  student exchange program, you knew what you signed up for. Therefore, it is advisable to research about the place you are visiting and educate yourself about the local customs. The best way to enjoy your exchange program is by respecting the local culture and learning from it.

  • Don't go with preconceived notions
Media can be quite misleading in giving the true picture of the country you are visiting. Instead of believing everything you read, it is better to keep an open mind and experience things for yourselves. Many people would say that Russia is dangerous but there have been many Foreign Exchange Programs for High School Students in Russia and they all speak highly of the country and its culture.

  • Learn the local language
This will help you get through the day by being able to communicate with the people around you. Not speaking the common tongue can make it difficult for you to connect with the locals. You can eliminate the language barrier by learning the basics so that you can at least break the ice and start the conversation.

  •   Connect with other exchange students
The best way to get through your exchange program is by connecting to other exchange students. While fellow students would still be your friends, knowing someone else in the same position as yourself can help you learn from each other’s experiences.

  •  Start the prep work
It goes without saying that preparation is the key to succeed as exchange student. Many teenagers that want to participate in these programs use an agency that helps them find a school and a host family. Just make sure that program adds some tangible value to your life in terms in helping you earn extra credits or hold weight in your college applications.

At the same time, if you are planning to do this abroad,  then you should cover all bases and insure yourselves. The most important thing is to not get depressed or feel homesick because the culture is too hard for you to understand or relate with. Just connect with the local community and embrace it as part of your learning.
