Tips for a Healthier Smile

by David Mickel Educational Management

Your smile plays a significant role in the first impression you make. It is the first thing people notice and don't easily forget. Creating a healthier smile can't be achieved overnight, but adopting healthy oral practices goes a long way. To get that healthier smile, make sure to consult those who are professionally equipped to handle your dental care.

In this piece, we share with you tips for a healthier smile:

Brush your teeth daily

In the absence of an excellent bruising routine, plaque accumulates and, in the long run forming tartar. Frequently brushing your teeth, preferably two times a day, ensures your teeth are healthier and whiter. Your brushing technique is also essential. Angle your brush at 45 degrees to your gum line and use just the proper pressure. Use small gentle strokes. Don't forget to brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria that may lead to bad breath.

See your dentist twice every year

Routine clean-ups every six months with professional dentists Auckland promote good oral health and a beautiful smile. Irregular cleaning may lead to periodontal disease, which can cause receding and bleeding gums. Periodontal disease is linked to other health conditions such as stroke, obesity, diabetes and sleep apnea.

Drink plenty of water

Water is not only healthy for your bodily functions but also for your teeth. It discourages tooth decay and flushes out food particles that may still be clinging to your teeth. Opt for water with monitored levels of fluoride as it also promotes healthy teeth.

Use quality oral products

Electric toothbrushes are highly recommended due to their effectiveness, however, a bristled manual toothbrush also helps thoroughly clean your teeth. Take good care of your toothbrush and ensure it dries properly after every use. Store it in an upright position to allow airing. Fluoride is an important additive used in toothpaste as it helps strengthen the enamel. Using toothpaste and mouthwash with fluoride can help brighten teeth and attain a healthier smile.

Floss daily

Flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth. It helps dislodge plaque from under the gumline and between teeth. When plaque is left unremoved, it hardens to form tartar which causes periodontal disease. If flossing isn't your cup of tea, try an oral irrigator. It sprays mouthwash or water to help remove the plaque and food particles.

Watch out for specific foods

Watch out for foods and drinks that jeopardize the health of your teeth. Drinks like wine and coffee can stain your teeth, while those with a lot of sugar may erode the tooth enamel. Limit your tea, coffee and wine intake. Drinking using a straw also reduces staining and the risk of tooth decay. It would also help if you rinse your mouth frequently with water after drinking something that may put your oral health at risk.

While the intended changes may not occur overnight, these tips will undoubtedly help you acquire or restore a healthier smile over time.
