Three Benefits of Choosing an Accredited Home School Program

by Kristen White Blogger
Accreditation is not required for homeschoolers; however, before deciding against it, parents should take time to understand the process and the advantages that come from partnering with a program that has received this designation. The purpose of accreditation is to have an independent external agency come in to evaluate the online program’s curriculum, teaching methods and system to determine if it meets educational and professional standards of excellence. . There are multiple accrediting agencies across the country that focus on a variety of important educational aspects, including state, regional, distance learning, and faith-based programs.  Additionally, the NCAA has a process for approving educational programs tht permit successful student athletes to compete athletically in college after graduating from high school. Once a school has received their accreditation and NCAA approval, the school must maintain their accreditation which is reviewed periodically by the accrediting body to ensure the school maintains their high-level of educational excellence that parents can rely upon.

So why is it important for families to find accredited online Christian school? The first benefit is that homeschoolers can enroll in a faith-based program that has been identified as meeting national standards so they will receive an approved Bible curriculum as well as the core subject areas. Many families choose homeschooling because they want their children to receive a faith-based education which is not provided in the public format and brick-and-mortar private schools may be too expensive. There are also online schools that promote a faith-based curriculum but are not accredited and there is no guarantee that what the student is learning is appropriate for their specific  grade level.

This leads to the most important benefit of choosing the best online Christian schools that are  accredited.  During the accreditation review process, the on-site accreditation assessors are not only looking at the curriculum, but they are assessing whether it addresses the necessary skills and concepts that are appropriate for the grade level in question. Some states require annual assessment tests for homeschoolers, so it is important that these students receive an education that prepares them to be successful in these tests. When a home school program has been accredited, parents can have peace of mind that their child is receiving an education that is in line with or even better than their peers  and yet obtained at home in a comfortable and safe environment.

Thirdly, accredited online schools keep track of all documentation and create and maintain complete records so the successful student can receive a diploma instead of having to get their GED or use home-produced documents as proof of their education.  When receiving a diploma and transcripts from an accredited online school it is easier for colleges to review and accept because them because they recognize that the program has met recognized standards. This ensures that homeschool students can have a smooth transition from high school to the college of their choice to pursue their dreams.

There are many advantages to home education and there are a variety of home school options  for parents to employ with their kids. Take time to review each one and decide which has the greatest potential for giving students the path to their future goals and keeping them on track with a quality education.
