The Versatility Of The Modern Concrete Floor

by Robert F. Read My Articles, Learn More...
The concrete floors of today have so much to offer, they aren’t used just in the garage and basement anymore. Concrete is becoming a stylish choice for builders who want to create unique looks in a floor that is easy to clean and lasts a long time. Applying an epoxy coating to the surface will prevent the concrete from absorbing moisture and concrete is even an excellent choice with radiant heating as it absorbs heat so that it takes less energy to keep your home comfortably warm.

Finishes for Concrete Floors

There are many more options for finishing concrete floors today, including stains, colours and aggregates that can be used in an infinite number of designs. You can also choose between a textured floor and one that is buffed to a glossy finish. There are also a number of ways to add colour to a concrete floor including:

  -  Dyes – For more vivid shades of colour, dyes can be mixed into your epoxy coating onsite.

  -  Integral Colour – Colour is added directly into the concrete mix.

  -  Paint – There are paints that are designed specifically for applying to concrete floors and/or other concrete surfaces.

  -  Stains – These colours can give each floor a unique, translucent finish.

  -  Colour hardeners – these are applied to freshly poured and cured concrete to give the surface colour.

Aggregates can be applied to concrete floors to change the texture and/or appearance. One option is to use paint flakes with an epoxy coating for a unique design while some people also use crushed stone, gravel or other materials to create a rougher surface.

There are also a number of choices for surfaces. Textures include polished, smooth and troweled. Some professional companies also use stamping process to create a pattern in the floor while others “score” the floor surface with a saw.

Both existing concrete floors and decorative overlays that are applied over other types of existing flooring can be improved with the use of decorative treatments. Sometimes overlays are preferred to repairing damaged concrete as required before applying the pain, finish or epoxy coating to the surface. The overly will provide you with a smooth, clean surface to work with without the need for repairs.

The Eco-Friendly Flooring Material

Unlike all the synthetic flooring materials that are used and thrown away, concrete is an eco-friendly flooring material. It requires less energy to make it, does not deplete any natural resource, and you can purchase it from a local company. Its natural ability to resist mould and mildew makes it an ideal choice for indoor use, especially since it is odour-free and contains none of the dangerous VOCs some materials are made with.

Epoxy coating is also an environmentally-friendly choice for finishing your concrete floor and making it resistant to spills and friction. Both concrete and epoxy are easy to clean, great for any area of your home, and exceptionally pet-friendly. Concrete with an epoxy barrier is durable, waterproof, stain-resistant and beautiful to look at.
