The Ultimate Wagon – Mercedes Benz G-Class

The Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen or G-Wagon began in the early 70s and in 1979 the first non-military G model was released. It is a go-anywhere SUV and for 40 years, it proves to be capable and able to survive the harshest conditions. The earlier G-Wagons were available in a 2-door pickup truck, two-door convertible, 3-door wagon, and 5-door wagon body styles.

 

Engine

The G-Class comes with several engine options powered by 4-speed automatic, 4-speed manual, 4-speed (4G-Tronic) automatic, 5-speed (5G-Tronic) automatic, 5-speed manual, 7-speed (7G-Tronic), and 9-speed (9G-Tronic) automatic transmission.

The turbocharged 3.0L (OM642 DE30) diesel engine produces 184 hp with 8.7 km/l fuel consumption and accelerates 0-100 km/h in 13 seconds with a speed of 160 km/h. The bi-turbo 4.0L (M176) SOHC engine produces 510 hp consuming 7.2 km/l and 0-100 km/l acceleration in 4.5 seconds with speed of 210 km/h. The 5.0L (M113 E50) SOHC engine produces 306 hp consuming 9.2 km/l. The 5.4L (M113 E54) SOHC engine produces 348 hp and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds with a maximum speed of 250 km/h.

Interior & Exterior

The interior of G-Class looks modern with round air vents, 12.3-inch digital displays and storage pockets such as removable front cup-holders, front seat jacket pockets, an overhead sunglasses holder, and door pockets with bottle holders. The G-class has plenty of headroom and legroom with a boot capacity of 667 liters and can extend to 1,246 liters.

The exterior appearance of the G-Wagon has been maintained throughout the years and offers completely improved body panels and an overhauled chassis. It also managed to keep its identity, from its distinctive door handles, the door closure sound, the spare wheel on the tailgate, and the indicators that sit atop the front wings.


Features

The G-Class also offers some of the latest technology including a Mercedes COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data System) infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display controlled using a touchpad controller and scroll wheel on the center console, 15 speakers, Bluetooth, USB ports navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and satellite radio. Other features include massaging front seats, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

Standard driver assistance/safety features include a Mercedes’ Pre-Safe, forward collision warning, rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, active brake assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, park assist, driver drowsiness monitoring, and a tire pressure control system.
