The trait of great leaders

by Dan Rob Project management Expert

What do successful chief operating officers and executives want from their senior managers? IBM recently asked this question from thousands of CEOs in more than 50 countries. The three leadership traits that mattered most were:

  1. Ability to focus intensely on customer needs

  2. Ability to collaborate with colleagues

  3. Ability to inspire.

Data gathered by Project management institute-PMI and harvard business review from thousands of managers and leaders confirms this.

It is amazing that when we talk with leaders who want to improve and be more inspiring, they simply do not know what to do and seem helpless as where to start.

Great leaders do most of the following:

  1. They set stretch goals with their team.

  2. They spent time developing their subordinates.

  3. They engaged in highly collaborative behavior.

  4. They encouraged those about them to be more innovative.

  5. They are more adept at making emotional connections with their subordinates

  6. The more of these behaviors a leader exhibited, the greater that leader is perceived to be.
