So you took a MySpeed… now what? It’s fun to measure how fast your internet connection is, but you may not realize that you can take those results a step further. We’ve gathered some fantastic ways to put your newfound information to use so you can save yourself time, money and data. But first a very quick primer on internet testing and what speed check internet you should be looking for. Skip ahead if you’re already a pro.

- Clean up your computer

There are lots of applications on your computer that could be using the internet data, possibly some without you even knowing it. Therefore, speed check online results may often not be good.

Windows updates, security scans and updates, media player pop-ups, instant chat applications, Skype and open website tabs can all affect your broadband speed.

To boost your speed, shut down applications that you're not actively using, as well as any bandwidth-heavy streaming services like BBC iPlayer and Spotify. To do this:

On PC, press the key combination ALT + CTRL + DEL to open up the task manager , and then you can see all programs running in order to close the ones you don't want.

Open Activity Log to see a list of everything running. Close down the ones that aren't essential.

Also, you should delete unnecessary files and clear your browser history. Open your web browser options menu, you will see clear browsing data or press Ctrl + Shift + Delete to clear all.

- Move your router

Lots of factors can impact the strength of a wireless broadband signal, such as concrete walls, metal doors and interference from baby monitors, microwaves and fairy lights on your Christmas tree.

So if you're suffering from slow or unreliable Wi-Fi, let’s check if your router is placed at the wrong position or not. Ideally, it should be positioned high up - on top of a bookshelf, for example and in the center of your home for wider signal coverage. These locations have fewer obstacles therefore, transferring Wifi signals will be better.

- Secure your Wifi

Secure your Wifi is the first thing you should consider to improve the speed check online result. If the password of your Wifi is so easy to guess or you set the password for free, you should stop it immediately. Because, anyone can use your Wifi which makes overloaded internet users, slow down speed.

Fortunately, most service providers now automatically supply you with a password for the router in order to prevent someone from stealing your bandwidth.

If you do not set the password, let do this:

Open your router settings by entering its IP address into your web browser. That's a number that's typically printed on the router itself somewhere, and looks like this:192.168.0.1.

To set a password, you need to log in. The admin password and username will also often be shown on the router, but if not, you can call customer care of your provider to be guided more. Follow the guidelines, you can set up a password and secure your speed check Wi-Fi

- Get a powerline adapter

Powerline adapters use the electricity power lines in your house to boost your signal from room to room. These are particularly useful if there are many rooms in the house  and placing an adapter in rooms where your wireless signal is weak.

Some providers, including TalkTalk, can provide powerline adapters, although you may have to pay for them.

Alternatively, you can buy and use your own. There are plenty to choose from, here are some that come highly recommend and are on sale on Amazon.co.uk

- Switch broadband

If you find that your connection is still slow, the speed check online result does not have some changes,  switching to another provider is probably the best solution.

Companies should be able to do a line test and give you an indication of the speeds you can expect to see before you sign up - and if they don't deliver, you may have the right to cancel your contract. Read more about Ofcom's rule on this.

If you're currently on an ADSL standard broadband service and ready to boost your speed, your best bet is to upgrade to fibre optic broadband.

The fastest widely available fibre broadband is from Virgin Media. But it's not as widely available as fibre broadband from the likes of BT, Sky, EE, Vodafone and TalkTalk.

Conclusion

So, with the top tips above, I hope you can speed up your internet speed effectively. Speed check online such as MySpeed, Speedtest will be useful tools for you to check if there are some changes or not.
