The power of combining meditation and music

by Malka Yaacobi MINDFULNESS AND LIFE COACH, MEDITATION INSTRUCTOR

Everyone assumes that meditating with music will significantly improve their life and meditation experience. But is there any truth to it? Does combing meditation and music really work?

Well, of course, it works – and in more ways than you could ever imagine!

To begin with, it can actually improve your mood.

Think of how songs, in general, affect your mood. Some songs make you dance, some make you feel nostalgic, and some make you feel sad. Meditation music is no different. Even if you don’t know how to meditate correctly, the right meditation music can help put your body and soul into a calming meditative state.

Meditation music comes in a wide variety of genres. You can listen to the smooth sounds of nature, musical instruments, or even a chorus of church singers. These soothing notes can help you break from the mind cluttering stresses of your hectic life, and help you seep into a relaxed meditative state. It can also help you purge yourself of negativity and depression.

It also affects your cognitive abilities.

When you’re stressed out, you may overreact and not think through a situation logically. You may even forget things such as where you left your car keys. When your mind is pulled in a million directions, it’s difficult to absorb, retain and process information. This confused mindset can hinder your ability to make rational decisions and enjoy your life. Meditation music enables you to calm these stressors and relieve your mind of these hindrances.

It relaxes your body.

Let's look at the soundtracks used in movies. Filmmakers know the influence of sounds. The screeching, eerie soundtrack plays a big part when you watch a horror movie because it increases your heart rate and stress levels. In contrast, a rom-com plays upbeat music which relaxes your body through cheerful melodies and comedic lines. Slow and soothing meditation music sends signals to your body to be at ease. Your muscles relax. Your breathing slows and becomes deeper. Your body is not sidetracked or alarmed by any fast, loud sounds. Meditation music decreases your stress level and removes distractions.

In conclusion,

The power of meditation music cannot be understated. You can utilize meditation music, mantras, and imagery to focus on the positive side of life. This visualization and deep breathing to the music can be extremely potent and can benefit your brain chemistry.
