The Natural Qualities of Leather Cord as a Stringing Material

by Sanjana Antony Freelancer

Many people love the fun of creating pieces of jewelry, either to add to their personal collections or to sell for profit. They always see to it that their jewelry making supplies such as beads, findings, wires, etc. are sufficient and they will have something to use right away as the need arises.  For stringing materials, there are a lot to choose from and use, from nymo loom thread, wildfire, cotton thread (or bootlace, or veggie leather), silk, nylon, beading wires and leather cord. However, your choice should be in accordance with the weight and size of the beads and pendants, the sizes of the holes, and whether or not you intend to leave a part of the thread to show.

Leather cord has become a popular stringing material because of its natural qualities. For one, leather is a natural product so it does not need to go through some processes as done in metals, like mining or some other chemical processes which are not favorable to the environment. When you first purchase leather cord for your crafting project, it may seem inflexible, but you’ll also find out later that it quickly softens and becomes easy to use. The leather material is softer and gentler to the skin compared to metallic chains that are also popularly used today.

If you are looking for a strong and durable thread for your project, leather cord is the most recommended, but you need to balance its thickness to the bead weight and bead holes.  This cord is available in several thicknesses and is ideal for modern and casual designs involving larger pendants and beads. For pieces that you can wear to the beach or the outdoors, this is a component that you can use easily. Besides being afford-ably priced, leather cord is also light weight, yet very strong to carry beads of heavy weight.

Novice jewelry makers find the leather cord easy to use, as no special cutting equipment is needed to work with it.  It is easy to fasten also; just make a clasp out by knotting the fabric. As you wear your necklace, you just knot and unknot the ends of the cord.  It is also possible to attach clasps such as the lobster claw, toggle, or swivel clasps if the security that these fasteners offer is what you want.  If the length of the necklace is enough to pass it through your head, then you just make a permanent knot out of the leather cord and pass the jewelry over your head.

You can buy leather cord from the haberdashers, hobby shops or online shops specializing in beads and beading supplies. This may come in the form of straight or flat, and twisted or braided.  This type of stringing material is a great option if you want to thread beads into a piece like a necklace. It is a natural looking; simple stringing supply and the wide variety of bead types on the market will allow you to have a wider range of choices as to the design of your project.
