Black Onyx stones are the stone which belong to the family of Chalcedony. The mineral Chalcedony has 2 kinds of variety, both are banded. Agate, the first variety of Chalcedony has curved bands and the Onyxes, the second variety, have parallel bands. These alluring stones are composed of Silica. On the Moh’s scale of hardness, these give a rating of 6.5 to 7 out of 10. The name “Onyx” is derived from a Greek word which stands for “Fingernail or Claw”. The Black Onyx stones are the most popular color variety of the Onyxes and these have been used since ages for their brilliant looks. This stone can be termed as one of the oldest known and used gems, as it has been described by Pliny the Elder in his book “Naturalis Historia” in the Roman Era. In addition to it, this stone has been used by Egyptians and described in the Holy Bible. Usually, the Black Onyxes we come across are artificially colored. This gemstone falls in the category of the Semi Precious Gemstone in the modern day categorization.
