Pirelli Tyres is the world’s 7th largest tyre manufacturing company specializing in car, motorcycle and bicycle tyres. It has 19 production sites in 13 different countries and operates in over 160 countries commercially. It is currently operating in Europe, Post-Soviet States, North America, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific.

Though it had ventured into various other products, it is now only a tyre producer and also actively participates in sponsoring sport competitions since the 20th century. The FIA Formula One Championship 2011-2023 and the FIM World Superbike Championship have Pirelli as their exclusive tyre partner.

Origin and History

Founded by Giovanni Battista Pirelli in 1872 in Milan, it started by producing rubber items, it was only later that it started focusing on mainly tyre production, which is the main focus now. The first plant was established a year later in 1873 to produce rubber products and soon the production of carriage tyres and tyres for velocipedes commenced. In the early 1900s, Pirelli expanded and opened production plants in European and South American countries.

Pirelli also holds the record for being the first Italian group with shares traded on the US market in the 1920s. A remarkable innovation was of the Superflex Stella Bianca, an immensely popular sport tyre which was conceived not long after the war, which had a reinforced tread that helped minimise the damage that was caused due to the high speeds of the vehicles. With further expansion into many countries and introduction of innovations like the first-ever motorcycle radial tyre, Pirelli continued to grow.

In 2005 it sold off its Cable business to Goldman Sachs and soon after became solely a tyre company.
