Nehru jackets for men are a hip length jacket or coat for men which has a mandarin collar. It’s single breasted and has 5 to 6 buttons in the front. It has two stomach pocket, one breast pocket and two pockets inside. It has either one or two slits at the back. The garment is named after the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, and it was marketed in the west this way. This jacket was originally designed after the bandhgala jacket or a prince coat. It was earlier worn by royalty and nobility in India for generations. But now, it has become a global garment. One can say, that the jacket belonged to the pre-independence time and stood the test of time with modifications now and then.

It has become a must-have option in every man’s wardrobe nowadays. This is because it can be worn on various different occasions whether it’s a formal event, a casual brunch, a pooja, a wedding, or other functions.

Previously it used to be made from wool, khadi, cashmere wool but now lighter fabrics are also used which includes cotton too.

In the present age, the Nehru Jacket has become popular as a desi vest-coat in many unconventional colors and is known as the Modi jacket, named after the present Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi. Different designers usually come up with different design ideas and hence there are a lot of varieties available. Nowadays, it's mostly sleeveless as compared to an original form of been full sleeves. It has become a common attire for news anchors, sports personalities, film stars, and politicians nowadays.

THE LOOK:

This attire does give a royal and elegant look when worn. It’s mostly worn with trousers for a formal look, a kurta pajama, tweed pants or a Jodhpuri pant. So, it's quite a versatile attire for men. It’s considered both classy and contemporary. A huge advantage of the Nehru jacket is that even a not so trim person can wear it hiding their belly fat. It's mostly in dark colors. The look can be completed by a good pair of shoes or jutis.

GLOBALLY:

This garment was always popular in the Indian sub-continent but became famous in the global world in the 1960s. After the Beatles band visited India and started wearing it on occasions, it became more popular in the Western world. The appearance of the outfit is very gentle and sober to have been accepted internationally.
