The Expertise of a Roof Plumber

by Civic Plumbing Sydney Professional Plumber
Whenever gutters or roofing concerns are cited, many tend to forget that we need plumbers. In New South Wales, carrying out plumbing or drainage job, which includes roof plumbing, requires a plumbing licence.

Roof plumbing defined

Roof plumbing, also known as storm water plumbing, is any task that involves roof flashing or covering. It works with any part of a drainage system that collects or disposes of storm water or any connection of storm water pipes to rainwater tanks. It also involves connection of storm water down pipes to your drainage disposal point.

Roof plumbing involves installation of guttering and down pipes on residential building roofs, design and installation of roof drainage systems for specified roof types, and selection of the right storm water disposal systems for use on residential buildings and installing them. Generally, roof plumbing covers all plumbing work involved in roofs, gutters, and down pipes.

But the roof coverings made of concrete, non-metallic tiles, timbre etc. are installed and repaired by roofers and are not under roof plumbing category.

Need for roof plumbing

When building a new house, a roof plumber is required for a different jobs such as design and installation of roof drainage systems; measurement, fabrication and installation of gutters, downpipes and storm water disposal systems; construction of roof flashing, duct work joints, angled gutters and stop ends; installation of rain water tanks and other collection devices; and termination of building storm water drains at street kerb or storm water drainage system.

Gutters and downpipes

Aside from new construction work, roof plumbers are also required for maintenance and repair in storm water and gutters. Gutters and down pipes are installed to enable the rainwater from your roof to be well-drained from the building structure and its surroundings.

Any water flowing down the building foundation may post serious harm such as roof leaks, foundation and property erosion, and mould and mildew problems.
Proper gutter cleaning, repairing, fitting gutter guards and installing mesh coverings to stop piling up leaves and other debris in gutters become very crucial. Plumbers are in charge of fixing leaks or blockage in storm water down pipes.

Rainwater tank

A rain water tank may reduce wastage of your water resources. Collected rain water can be used for watering garden plants or be connected to your house plumbing and used for laundry and in toilets for flushing.

Designing a rain water system needs a suitable tank size, fitting your gutters and down pipes with leaf guards, and adding tank screens and flap valves to draw away insects and have enough vents. Most rain water collection systems also use first-flush diverters to prevent the contaminated water from passing through your collection tank.

Roof leaks

Roof leaks can be very costly when left unattended. If your roof leak is brought by gutter blocks or improper storm water drainage, call your roof plumber. Preventive maintenance is the best option to reduce roof leaks with seasonal roof and gutter cleaning.

Flashing repairs

Roof flashing prevents water from entering the roof structure by creating a weather barrier. These are used around chimneys, skylights or other roof penetrations to make it water tight. If flashing is improperly installed, it causes leaks and may damage your tiles. Repair of improperly installed flashing or flashing leaks is also under roof plumbing.
