The evergreen trend for eCommerce - Customer Retention

Okay, you might have started reading this blog thinking it is just like all the other ones out there - "Top 10 marketing trends" or what not. That time has gone. There is no "Top 10", there is just one thing that you need to concentrate if you want your brand at the forefront of the industry.

Retaining Customers

Today's customers are hard to impress, yes this is true. With so many alternatives and substitutes for your brand, you should the absolute best at what you do to win them over. Or you should be the only player in the game ie. offer something that no other brands are able to offer. That said, what would you rather have. A flimsy customer base that comes and goes, or one that although slow growing, you have a strong connection with. I would prefer the one that you bond over.

In today's interconnected world filled with memes and DMs, the illusion of connection exists, but the ones who really matter are absent. This translates to brands as well. Everyone is just a corporate stooge and you can just feel it in the air. Having a brand identity that is unique, something that connects with the user on an emotional and personal level is what matters.

Instead of spending your hard earned money on trying to reel in new customers by dumbing down your vision for mass appeal is not what you should do. Stick to your niche. Trust me it will build. It just takes a spark to go viral. Keep your already existing customers happy. Offer them unbelievable value. This is what matters. Word of mouth. We seem to have gone back in time because as of right now word of mouth is the most convincing form of marketing.

Your satisfied customers will love telling about the exhilarating experience they have had with you. Once you have reached that point, you don't even need ads. The people who are interested will always be there.

What about all these new technologies I keep hearing about?

New tech keeps rolling out every day. We have seen products go viral and stay there. We have seen them flatline in a month too. With the tone of this blog, you might think that I'm some old timer trying to lure you away from all those fancy methods of digital marketing everyone is into. That is not what I am saying. You have to adapt to the times. Learn all the new tricks to the trade and keep yourself informed of all the updates. But never forget your priorities. Never forget the reason you started your brand. Never be something that you are not.

Be authentic about your branding strategy. It is okay if you are not the absolute number 1 in a field. You are probably innovative in another way. Big brands can take such risks of looking quirky. As a startup, you have the creative freedom to find the perfect brand identity. Find that and monetize on it. Learn about Artificial Intelligence. Read about customer demographics and the unique ways to learn about your customers. Don't skimp out on that.

Final Words

Customer retention should be your number one priority for 2018. Let's focus on that for the latter half of this year.
