The Different Options of Reusable Bottles

According to statistics, then 50 billion plastic water bottles are sold in a year worldwide. Of these, only 23% of bottles go through the recycling process. This means that more than 38 billion plastic bottles end up as waste in landfills. Single-use plastic water bottles are one of the leading causes of the world’s ever-growing plastic waste problem.

How are plastic bottles harmful?

Plastic is a nonbiodegradable material. It does not decompose naturally and is difficult to recycle. The plastic bottles which accumulate in these landfills get broken down after sitting there for many years. These smaller plastic particles leak into the ground and enter our rivers and streams. There is also a large portion of discarded plastic bottles that get washed up into our seas and oceans. Plastic bottle pollution is harming our marine life. Many fishes end up consuming these plastic bits which result in their death due to suffocation and intestinal occlusion.

Drinking water from plastic bottles can also have many negative health effects. Most of the bottles are made of a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA) which is used to make the plastic hard and clear. BPA has been linked to heart problems, early puberty in girls, reduced fertility in women, neurological difficulties, and even certain types of cancer. Plastic bottles also contain a harmful substance called Phthalates which can lead to reduced sperm count, testicular abnormality and other issues.

Advantages of reusable bottles

Water bottles made of sustainable materials like glass or stainless steel are slowly becoming popular. They are biodegradable and can be recycled easily. Reusable water bottles are eco-friendly in nature.

These bottles are also cheaper in the long run. By carrying a reusable bottle, people do not have to spend money on buying bottled water every time one goes out.

Reusable bottles are also BPA free. Thus, they are a healthier option to use for drinking water.

Sustainable alternatives to plastic bottles

Water bottles made of stainless steel are resistant to rust, chemicals and high temperatures. They can be vacuum sealed and insulated which keeps the drinks inside hot or cold for at least 12 hours. They are easy to carry.

• ·         Aluminum
  

The water bottle made of aluminum must be lined with a polyester protective film so that no harmful elements are released into the contents of the bottle. These water bottles are lightweight and can be easily carried.

• ·         Glass
  

Water bottles made of glass are difficult to carry because of its heavy weight. They are 100 percent recyclable, and are a great choice for indoor use. Glass bottles can be reused for other purposes such as home decoration or to keep plants.
