The Characteristics of Accident-Prone Drivers

by Kristen White Blogger
Many accidents happen as a result of defects, negligence and accidental circumstances. While this is true in most car accidents, there are some factors that increase the rate of injury or damage on the road. These factors are characterized by the individuals that may increase the possibility of an accident or those likely to be distracted while driving. This article will discuss some characteristics of drivers that are more likely to get involved in car accidents.

While there are a number of features that may increase the risk of an accident, they are not the only reason why injuries happen. The driver’s attitude, emotions, mental health and conduct of passengers play a vital role in the events leading to an accident.
Some of these features or factors include the following:

Age - it has been noted that youths tend to cause more accidents than most other age groups. When referring to youths this includes teens and those who have become adult teens. Statistics  show that teenage drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 years are three times more likely to be in a fatal accident than those that are over 20 years of age.

Additional statistics show that the leading cause of death for youths in the United States is automotive accidents. Due to the age of the driver and peer pressure, many teenage drivers combine drinking and driving which poses a risk for this age group. Another common behavior with teenagers is speeding; and when drivers speed, they are more likely to be involved in an accident and more likely to be involved in a serious accident. Elderly drivers are statistically more likely to be at risk of being involved in a car accident than other demographic groups. In this case aging affects hearing, vision and it slows down reaction times. In addition, aging causes memory problems that can interfere with safe driving.

Drunk driving - drunk drivers are one of the top reasons fatal traffic accidents happen. They are responsible for one-third of all fatal accidents in the United States. Drinking slows down a driver’s reaction time, causes vision failure, lowers concentration, reduces hand-eye coordination and may lead to lapses in judgement.

Distracted drivers
- distractions are one of the worst and most preventable issues while driving. When a driver is talking or texting on a cellphone, they run a risk of causing or being in a traffic accident. It is said that those who text while driving are 23 times more likely to cause or become part of a traffic accident than those that do not. For drivers who do not text or call they have to be on the lookout for drivers who do use their cellphones while driving. One article stated that every 4.6 seconds a driver’s vision is removed from the road and sent to their phone for texts. During that time concentration on watching traffic, road changes and signs is removed.

Speeding - speeding claims the lives of almost 10,000 people every year.
