The Basic Role of Antennas in IoT

Most devices in the field of IoT (Internet of Things) can benefit from the use of an antenna. Antennas directly affect the strength of wireless communication—it boosts signal, ensure connectivity from every direction, and minimizes noise. Given this, adding an antenna to your IoT application could spell the difference between an ineffective versus successful IoT product.

What is an antenna?

In a nutshell, an antenna is an external component that serves the basic function of transmitting and/or receiving RF (radio frequency) signals. Antennas come in various types of builds: PCB (printed circuit board) antennas, chip antennas, or whip antennas are a few examples. Besides that, different antennas can also convey different types of wireless communication, from GPS antennas and LTE antennas to Bluetooth antennas and more. 

Different types of antennas are optimized for different purposes, but a great antenna will generally do the same things—it ensures great range and reliable wireless connectivity. For the sake of this article, we’ll be focusing on GPS and LTE antenna, which are two common types of antennas used in the field of IoT.

What is a GPS antenna?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS antennas are designed to transmit and receive signals specifically from satellites. They are primarily used for location tracking, such as in navigation units, smartphones, or cars, which often come with GPS antennas built into their system.

In IoT, GPS antennas serve the same purpose and can be applied in all types of projects. For example, GPS antennas can be crucial components in IoT solutions for the fields of logistics, transportation operations, and asset monitoring. GPS antenna helps enhance safety, speed, and security when it comes to accurate location tracking. They can even be used in more domestic scenarios, such as in nursing homes where IoT devices are used to monitor the movement of residents. 

What is an LTE antenna?

Unlike GPS antennas, LTE antennas are not necessarily used for location tracking purposes. LTE antennas are often used to boost connectivity in remote sites and are commonly employed by enterprises, especially those in fields like mining, engineering, and energy. 

LTE antennas help to strengthen the performance of IoT deployments, ensuring reliable connection in inconsistent environments, such as in moving vehicles or during inclement weather changes.

How can you enhance the performance of your antenna?

Antennas are effective enough as components on their own, but there are several accessories available that help ensure peak performance and extend the product’s lifespan. A magnetic antenna base, for example, can be used to securely mount an antenna to flat metal surfaces. Depending on the design, a magnetic antenna base may be used indoors or outdoors. Magnetic antenna bases for outdoor use (such as those for mounting on vehicles) must be designed to withstand damage caused by environmental factors, such as rainfall or extreme winds.

In conclusion, always consider using an antenna when building an IoT solution. Though antennas are often overlooked as optional accessories, they can make all the difference in the quality and performance of your IoT device.
