by Alvin Williams Marketing Manager at Aphrodite Marble & Granite Co

Granite countertops in Manahawkin tend to be both durable and aesthetically beautiful. It’s very popular among homeowners who choose to be enthusiastic about their countertops rather than worrying about the price!

Caring for granite is very different from caring for other countertops. It’s a natural stone and many times it can stain and get damaged over time.

There are several myths and misconceptions surrounding granite countertop maintenance which leads to too much confusion. So we are here to let you know that once you get some clarity over the simple secret cleaning methods, you can do it too!

With minimal care, you can ensure that your countertop stays in great condition, including sealing the spaces, wiping the surface the right way and getting rid of rigid stains.

5 Ways To Take Care Of Your Granite Countertops

  1. Avoid Direct Heat Impact

Let me tell you, granite is one of the most durable natural stones out there! But if you keep placing a hot pan or pot on it, it would surely degrade its durability.

If you do have to keep a heated pan down for more than a few seconds, use a trivet beneath it.

Too much heat or pressure can break your granite countertop and do terrible harm. Always make sure to have something in the middle to reduce the heat impact, like a trivet.

  1. Cleaning Is A Must

You can make use of microfiber cloth to dust off the surface of your granite countertop. Such cloth is more than enough for daily cleaning. You can do your basic cleaning even with a dry microfiber cloth.

For spills, wipe down the stained surface only with water. Don’t go for any fancy chemicals available in the market! It’s best to use a solution that has neutral pH value, such that it’s non-acidic in nature and doesn’t harm your granite.

For oily stains, use a poultice made of flour or baking soda and some tablespoons of dish soap.

  1. Use A Cutting Board

You might be tempted to use your granite countertop to cut your vegetables, as one might think that a knife won’t do any damage to the surface!

But you’re wrong! Avoid the possibility of scratching the surface and protect your knife as well.

Not only your countertop gets affected, your knife too will be equally damaged if you use it on the surface.

So, you should never use your granite countertop as a cutting board.

  1. Disinfect With Proper Solution

The good thing about granite is that it’s a natural stone, so it repels bacteria on its own! But if you do want to disinfect any remaining bacteria from your house, then follow below…

Use a solution made of water and 91% isopropyl alcohol. Mix the solution and spray it on your granite countertop.

Let the solution settle down for 4 - 5 minutes. After that, rinse with water and use a soft dishcloth to dry the surface.

  1. Sealing

Have you heard of this phrase, “Prevention is better than cure”? If you have then you know what I am talking about. Yes, we can surely stop the dirt build-up in the first place, then we don’t have to do a lot while cleaning later!

We can seal the granite countertop often with sealers. Sealing can be done in a period of 6 months to a year. But don’t overdo it!

If your granite is dark, it will be denser, less porous, and less at risk for staining than lighter colored granite. So such granite might need less sealing, on the other hand, a light granite might not be able to resist everyday spills.
