Soothing Sensitive Skin with Solvaderm

by Lisiana Carter PhD in health is a general health expert,
You may be reading this because you have been told by one or two skin care professionals that you have sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is not the easiest to deal with or even diagnose as it isn’t fully considered a medical condition but more of a dermatological ailment. Sensitive skin is more of a skin reaction to elements, products, and external stimuli. Dermatologists look for very specific skin reactions when diagnosing sensitive skin: skin reactions like erosion or bumps, very dry skin, itchy or red and irritated areas, and a tendency towards skin flushing (blushing). Your dermatologist will likely recommend a new skin care regimen that includes lifestyle changes as well as using products that have been specially formulated for sensitive skin like those provided by Solvaderm.

Causes of Sensitive Skin

  • Certain skin disorders and allergic reactions such as rosacea, allergic contact dermatitis, or eczema
  • Super dry skin than can no longer protect from the elements which leads to reactions
  • Excessive exposure to skin-damaging  elements and environmental factors like the sun and urban living or repeated exposure to extreme heat or cold
  • Age and race may even play a role in skin sensitivity and other genetic factors

Symptoms of Sensitive Skin

  • Stinging, itching, or burning sensations
  • Puffy skin, especially around the eyes
  • A rash that may appear bumpy and red
  • Skin flushing – otherwise known as blushing
  • Scaling and peeling of the skin
  • Dryness – skin may feel ‘tight’
  • Hives

You should be avoiding any harsh chemicals and soaps on your skin. Choose cleansers that are formulated specifically for sensitive skin which tend to be mild. You also want to avoid products that contain a long list of ingredients – many of those ingredients are too harsh for your skin so try and choose products with a short list with very little, or ideally, no fragrance. You should also avoid products that contain alcohol which can be very drying and use cosmetics that are non-irritating and non-comedogenic. Try to avoid super-hot showers and be sure to use sunscreen every day. Lastly, if you find certain conditions or products irritate your skin, try to avoid them. This will likely prevent your sensitive skin symptoms from appearing in the first place.

The summer and winter months can surely wreak havoc on your skin so be sure to keep the temps in your home within a comfortable range and try to use humidifiers in the winter so that the surrounding air never becomes too dry. Try and use moisturizers in the winter that contain glycerin or petrolatum. In the summer (and all year round ideally), try and find sunscreens whose active ingredients are zinc oxide or titanium dioxide – these ingredients are hypoallergenic so your sensitive skin should be fine1.

Lastly, look for a brand that has spent years of scientific research to bring products that can be trusted no matter what your skin condition may be. Solvaderm’s full line of skin care products contain specially formulated cleansers, toners, and moisturizers for sensitive skin.
