Turmeric and insomnia

SleeplessZone.com publishes a new article, “Does Turmeric Help Insomnia”. The website provides natural remedies for improved sleep.

Joy Healey, the author of the article, explains that curcumin—the main compound of turmeric—is a powerful anti-inflammatory that may aid in more restful sleep. Not only can it improve the quality of your rest, but it may also reduce chronic pain symptoms.

Why turmeric?

Turmeric is the major source of curcumin, which has been studied to reduce inflammation in the muscles. While a study published in the journal Foods states that curcumin may be useful for athletes or those who regularly perform high-impact sports, the researchers also believe that the compound may be used for other conditions, including insomnia.

Nevertheless, curcumin on its own is not enough. Joy explains that curcumin—despite its numerous advantages—has poor bioavailability. To “activate” the compound, you need to combine it with piperine, a major component of black pepper. Joy recommends people with insomnia create a natural turmeric paste with black pepper to receive the greatest number of benefits.

Don’t want to make your own? No problem! There are many turmeric supplements available today. But be careful—always check the label to see how much curcumin is present. Unfortunately, some supplements include a lot of fillers, which are not beneficial.

Use turmeric in combination

In her new article, Joy says that creating a sleep schedule is also very important to better rest. Turmeric can aid in relaxation, but its full benefits are experienced when you use it in conjunction with proper sleep habits. This includes not using electronics for a few hours before bedtime, sleeping in complete darkness, and bathing before bed. Joy says that training your body to know it is bedtime is one of the most effective ways to combat insomnia.

Remember: turmeric is not a magic pill that can instantly make you fall asleep. Rather, it helps relax you so that you can sleep better and with higher quality rest.

SleeplessZone.com regularly posts tips for insomnia relief. From natural remedies to suggested sleep gear, the educational resource hopes to help more adults find the peaceful, restful sleep they need.

Joy writes, "If you’ve ever tossed and turned at night, you know that quality sleep is as important as the number of hours you get. This is where turmeric steps in. The compounds in turmeric, particularly curcumin, might help you fall asleep more easily and deepen the quality of your sleep."
