Six Interesting Facts About Lord Vishnu Only Few People Know

Lord Vishnu, is one of the essential Hindu deities among three supreme Gods Trinity. He is considered to be the Protector of the universe. He is commonly known as Narayana. He was born as 12th Aditya to Kashyap and Aditi in the form of a Dwarf. Lord Vishnu has a large number of devotees who follow Vaishnavism. It is believed that Lord Vishnu resides in Vaikunth river on a bed made of thousand serpents. He has four hands which hold Sanhka, Gada, lotus flower and chakra.  


According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Vishnu is the saviour of the universe, and he has been visiting the world in many avatars, whenever the universe is in trouble. This pleasant & quiet God is being worshipped by many, but there are certain facts known to only a few people. A few of these are given here below :


Lord Brahma Originated from the navel of Lord Vishnu:


According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Vishnu was in deep meditative sleep on the snake bed in the deep ocean for ages with Lordess Lakshmi on her side. On his waking up, a lotus flower rose from his belly, and on the blossoming of the same, it gave birth to Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma bowed to Lord Vishnu and then with his blessing started the process of creating the world. 


Besides it,Legends state that Lord Vishnu had a long foot, as long as 40 cm. Such a temple known as Vishnupad or Dharamshala is located near the Falgu river. It stands testimony to the 40 cm long footprint thronged by devotees to pay their respect. Lord Vishnu’s footprint shown in the Lord Vishnu Statue has nine symbols symbolizing Lord Vishnu's weapons, including Shankar, Chakram, and Graham. 


Female Avatar of Lord Vishnu:


Lord Vishnu has been visiting the earth on several auspicious occasions and in different male roles. But, he little do people know that he had visited earth once in a female avatar. It was the avatar of Mohini, which was one of the important characters during Samudra Manthan. Lord Vishnu, in the avatar of Mohini, was a wonderful and attractive woman. During the Samudra Manthan, she acquired the famous Amrit from the Rakshas (Asurs) and gave it to the Devtas, making them immortal.Even in today’s modern era, people preach the female Vishnu murti with utmost sincerity & dedication.


Cursed by Bhrigu


Lord Vishnu was cursed by Maharishi Bhrigu. As per History, the Asuras took shelter in the Ashram of Maharishi Bhrigu, who was away for some work. The Devtas, who were looking for an opportunity to defeat the Asuras, found this moment was appropriate for an attack. They attacked the unarmed Asuras, who to save their lives requested Maharishi Bhrigu’s wife ‘Kavyamata, to save them. Being guests in her Ashram, she felt dutiful to save them and hence used her powers to stop Devtas from destroying the Asuras. 

 

Seeing this, Gods requested Lord Vishnu to help them, who used his Sudarshana Chakra to behead Kavyamata’s head, who was protecting the Asuras. On his return, Maharishi Bhrigu fumed as Lord Vishnu had broken the dharma by killing a woman, his wife. He then cursed Lord Vishnu to suffer the pain of birth and death many times. Resultantly, Lord Vishnu had to be born on earth many times.  


An asteroid named after Lord Vishnu:


A rare, near-earth object of about 0.4 Kilometers in diameter was discovered by an American astronomer, Eleanor F.Helin on 2nd August 1986. This asteroid was named after Lord Vishnu and called ‘4034 VISHNU’.


The Legends of Nepal’s Monarchy:



There are 106 temples of Lord Vishnu of which 105 are in India and one in Nepal. The Budhanilkantha Temple in Nepal is the largest and most beautiful stone carving temple there. It has a beautifully carved Lord Vishnu idol placed on Shesh Naag, in a pond of water representing the cosmic sea. Devotees flock from around the world to seek blessings of Lord Vishnu.  


Several Other Facts:


Besides the above facts, there have been many other interesting facts which are not known to the common please i.e.

  1. Lord Vishnu has taken 23 rebirths on earth and the 24th, his last, would be at the end of Kaliyuga.

  2. Lord Vishnu is remembered in India with over 1,000 names. 

  3. Lord Vishnu is believed to have a blue coloured body, which symbolizes his eternal purity and nature as that of the blue ocean.

  4. Lord Vishnu wakes up from his meditating sleep after every 10,000 celestial years.
