There are general signs of drug use and there are specific signs of drug use. If your loved one is acting funny and cagey, if their routine has changed dramatically then there may be reason for concern. Here are some signs of abuse related to specific drugs that you should know about.

Marijuana/cannabis

Marijuana and cannabis based products like edibles initially produce euphoria. They produce heightened auditory and visual perceptions but the user can seem to be uncoordinated and forgetful. Barbiturates and Benzodiazepines

These are CNS depressants that are often prescribed to treat sleep disorders and anxiety. Barbiturates are not used as much as they used to be and they are employed to treat seizure disorders and during surgery. Barbiturates carry a higher overdose risk than benzodiazepines. A person abusing these drugs will appear uninhibited, dizzy or depressed. They will also experience balance issues, blurry vision, and be in an overall state of confusion. Involuntary eye movements called nystagmus will be observed.

Hallucinogens

The telltale signs of hallucinogen use depend on the type of hallucinogen being abused. LSD causes the person to act impulsively and experience hallucinations. If a person has PCP they will be impervious to pain and also loud noise. Someone who uses magic mushrooms will experience hallucinations, nausea, and muscle twitching and have difficulty differentiating between hallucinations and reality.

Opioids

Opioids include both heroin and prescription painkillers like Oxycontin and Vicodin. Signs of opioid abuse include overall sedation, inability to concentrate, slowed reaction time and memory issues. Mood swings and lethargy are also signs that a loved one in on this dangerous drug. Because opioids slow the digestive system, users will experience constipation and other intestinal issues. When the user is not on the drug, he or she will become anxious and display flu like symptoms.
