With the rapidly evolving nature of the senior housing industry, there are constant innovations that are coming into effect in the design trends. Baby boomers are seen to be shaping the trends in senior care design a lot more over the last few years.

In 2017, several trends made their mark in the senior living interior designs. With the rise in the demand for a more personalized and boutique living experience, these trends aim at enhancing the residents' everyday living.

Here are the top seven trends that made their mark in senior care design.

Built for luxury

Gone are the days of boring and sterile furniture and interiors for senior living facilities. 2017 saw the marked rise in the demand for interior designs that reflected a sense of style and luxury. Boutique living and resort-like settings, with plush modern elements were definitely the pick for this past year.

Spaces that encourage greater community participation

This year saw a greater incorporation of the outside community into the senior living facility designs. Breaking the traditional model of complete isolation of the residents from the world outside, developers are actively seeking to invite businesses and facilities such as rehab and salons to operare within the communities.

A greater need to stand apart from the others

Apart from the basic amenities that are the trademark of most senior living communities, 2017 saw the emergence of a greater focus on specialties. The developers and planners are putting more emphasis on providing amenities that cater to specific prevalent conditions in their communities, in order to gain a greater competitive advantage.

Creative wellness programs

Wellness programs incorporated into the senior living interior design idea, is definitely not a new trend. However, what is new in 2017, is the emergence of creative wellness programs such as cooking demonstrations, high-end salons and spas offering personalized massage and beauty services.

Short-term rehabilitation services

2017 saw a disntinctive move away from the model of long-term care beds in the senior living facilities. Communities have definitely shifted their focus to designing spaces that are more suitable for short-term rehab. With the rise in the trend of choosing the assisted living facilities for short-term recovery after surgeries, the design trend has also shifted towards more resort-style amenities.

Greater incorporation of technology

Senior living design trends has seen a marked increase in the incorporation of technology into the communities. With the baby boomers integratting more and more technology into their daily lives, the need for stepping up the design game has also become of prime importance. USB connections, WiFi, and even high-end features such as keyless room entry, and other technological innovations have definitely made their presence felt in the interior designing for senior living facilities.

Bringing the outdoors inside

In order to allow the residents a greater sense of the outdoors, senior living communities are putting more stress on designing their facilities to include outdoor respite spaces. There is also an increased use of biophilic elements, including the color palettes for the interiors.
