by Shruti Sharma Content Curator

Look around and you would easily find that there are one or more members within the family who are suffering from a chronic health issue. Which is precisely the reason why one should be equipped with enough medical equipment at home, in case an emergency pops up.

Having a first aid box or a self-help kit at home isn’t enough. One should know how to use this medical equipment as well. Here are some self-help medical tips that one should follow by heart.

#1 Always keep a nebulizer at home

These are the devices that channel medication via nasal passage into the lungs. It is especially good for people suffering from Asthma. Even, something as trivial as a cold flu can be treated with the help of nebulizers. The main function of a nebulizer is using oxygen or compressed air and get it mixed with the medication so that it can reach out to the lungs directly. It is especially useful during the winter season as most people suffer from cough, cold, and flu at this time.

#2 Keep burn gel, crepe bandages and Scar gels in first aid kit

Many of us think that having a burn or scar injury at home is next to impossible; on the contrary, most scar and burn injuries happen in bathrooms or kitchens. Hence, you should have a good quality scar gel in your first aid box. In case of a muscle pull or any such injury, you should also have a crepe bandage.

Before applying a burn gel or crepe bandage at the infected area, you should follow the procedure given below:

·         Once you wash your hands properly with a disinfectant soap, apply hand sanitizer on it.

·         Squeeze 3-4 drops of hand sanitizer on your palm

·         Make sure that your hands are completely wet and covered with the sanitizer

·         Rub your hands together for about 10 minutes until they are completely dry

·         Make sure the sanitizer reaches all surfaces of your hands; even the area in between the fingers

·         In case you haven’t washed your hands with a soap, clean them with wet wipes before using the sanitizer

#3 Glucometer for diabetes patients

It is a medical device used to measure blood sugar levels. Now that diabetes or sugar has become common in almost every Indian householder, having a glucometer is non-negotiable. The good thing is if you have a glucometer at home, you need not visit the doctor every week, which is usually required for sugar patients.
