Role and Duties of Accountants in a Business Firm

Generally, we interact with accountants regularly, or only once a year during tax season. That's when they’re mainly noticeable, but accountants work behind the scenes year-round. As the financial backbone of a company, they help people to map goals, plan how to achieve them and then take the required steps.

An accountant executes financial functions associated to the collection, accuracy, recording, analysis and presentation of a business, organization or company's financial operations. The accountant generally plays a variety of administrative roles within a company's operations. In a small scale company, an accountant's function may consist of primarily financial data collection, entry and report making. Middle to larger sized corporate houses may utilize an accountant as an adviser and financial analyst, who may present the company's financial data to people within and outside of the business.

Key Roles of the Accounting Department

There are few essential roles and duties of virtually any accounting department should include are:

·         Money out – making payments and maintain the bills paid

·         Money in – processing incoming payments

·         Payroll – make sure everyone gets paid (including the government)

·         Reporting – preparing financial reports, e.g. P&L, Balance sheets and budgets

·         Financial Controls – to avoid errors, fraud and theft

Required Skills

One of the most important skills desired for accounts clerks is the ability to give attention to every detail. Accounting clerk is responsible for conducting a variety of accounting transactions with as few mistakes as possible. Many accounting clerks handle a lot of documentation work, so they must be disciplined. Accounting clerks are accountable for much of a company’s sensitive financial information, and should handle transactions discreetly and possess integrity. They must understand basic accounting ethics, such as debits and credits.

Credential Requirements

Most organizations require accounting clerks to have at least a high school diploma. However, some big companies prefer them to have an associate's degree or equivalent work experience. Only some companies require bachelor’s degrees unless the job is highly specialized. Accounting clerks may benefit from accounting certifications obtained through community colleges and technical schools. Some companies need employees have experience with certain accounting software programs. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access is also beneficial.
