RFID Solutions for Your Organization - Running a Warehouse Efficiently
by Erez Gordan Internet MarketingThe first time that the RFID solutions was mentioned, there was a
hesitation as to its relevance in the vast industry of warehousing.
Nevertheless it has become part and parcel of the industry so much so that one
cannot mention the word warehouse without mentioning RFID.
What
is RFID?
To begin with, RFID is a synonym for Radio Frequency Identification. It
works with what is referred to as Real Time Locating System (RTLS).
When merchandise is stored in a warehouse, it is normally easy to
arrange it. Problems come when a specific item has to be retrieved and time is
limited. This is where RFID solutions come into the picture. Using the RTLS,
wireless tags are attached to the merchandise upon arrival at the warehouse,
after the barcodes are input into a system which later on are used together
with a device that tracks a particular merchandise and saving time eventually.
Pros
and Cons
There are advantages and disadvantages when it comes to considering to
either incorporate the RFID solutions or not. Disadvantages arise due to the
amount of work to be done in order to migrate from a manual system to this
automated one. Training is another disadvantage as people who are used to a
manual system will take time to fully migrate to a new system. At one point
there might be sabotage on the part of the employees who know that retrenching
follows after a successful system implementation.
Advantages of the system are numerous. One is that, the system
significantly reduces the work force hence lowering down the value of overheads.
Efficiency is also achieved in the sense of tracking particular merchandise
faster than physically trying to locate it. The system doesn’t need much to be
implemented and run so the maintenance is also limited. When it comes to
statistics, it is easy to maintain them with this automated system as opposed
to a manual one.
Conclusion
With the advantages outnumbering the disadvantages, it remains evident
that rfid solutions
are there for the good of the warehousing industry. They need to be implemented
for an efficient way of handling the merchandise. As technology trends
progress, the warehouse industry can’t be left behind. It is here that the bulk
of the work is done, implying that managers here have to keep abreast with
latest technology trends. Indeed RFID solutions is the technology trend that is
required now in warehousing.
