Review of Arcane

Almost all film adaptations of games have always come out at the maximum at the “you can watch” mark. Therefore, in the case of Arcane: League of Legends, the players did not expect a particularly interesting product, and the mass audience was not at all aware of what was at stake. But Riot Games (the creators of LoL, who were also responsible for Arcane) managed to create an incredibly beautiful and quickly gaining popularity series. "Arcane" from the first act (it came out once a week for three episodes) topped the Netflix tops in 38 countries, it was discussed in social networks, favorite characters were chosen and impatiently waiting for the continuation. Everyone unanimously praised the series for the picture: the animation was done by the Fortiche studio, which has long established itself with videos for LoL and other projects (for example, visualization in the Gorillaz and Converse collaboration clip). Technically, everything is done in 3D, but with textures reminiscent of 2D painting with paints - a rare technique that has become the hallmark of the studio. 

In the center of the plot are two sisters - Jinx and Vi, orphans from the dysfunctional city of Zauna, the conflict between which will separate them for several years. In parallel, in the nearby town of Piltover, young scientist Jace is trying to harness magic and introduce it into everyday life for the sake of progress. History is full of dualities: confrontation between two sisters, two brothers, two cities, rich and poor, progress and conservative caution. 

Vi, Jinx, Jace and a few other heroes are the champions of the game (as playable characters are called in LoL). They always had their own story, but before they told it in a nutshell: it was not even certain that Vi and Jinx were sisters. Jinx has long been considered the unofficial mascot of LoL - the image of a reckless girl with a grenade launcher turned out to be so bright. According to the game's mythology, she has always had a passion for explosions and destruction and a particular dislike for Vi. What happened between them and why the sisters quarreled is finally shown in the series. Nicolo Laurent, the head of Riot Games, said that he wanted to make a product for gamers, because it is more interesting to play LoL, knowing its champions better. But it turned out that Arcane was liked by everyone in general - even those who are as far as possible from the world of games. The plot of the series is presented clearly, and it does not differ in particular complexity. 

Everything is balanced in Arcane: incredible views of locations and expressive dialogues, perfectly combined with the most elaborate facial animation. All the characters in the foreground are multifaceted and interesting, with their own conflicts. Each scene of fights, chases and pursuits is a separate masterpiece of dynamic editing and style, all accompanied by driving music. And some dramatic moments, it seems, not every actor will be able to play the way the creators managed to embody it. "Arcane" is one of those rare works where every frame is perfect in terms of composition, color scheme, and even storytelling - in general, "you can put it as a screen saver." 

Because of its relatively simple plot, Arcane isn't a great masterpiece. But he does not pretend - the series did an excellent job of giving a few hours of magical beauty, sincere feelings for the characters and tense moments. So it's really worth watching for everyone. Thankfully, Arcane has already been  renewed for  a second season.
