Retinal Detachment- Facts to Know About It

by Raman K. Author

The retina is one of the most integral parts of the eye that is necessary for vision. However, since it is a thin tissue, it is prone to damage as well. These damages are not only related to some trauma, but it can also be due to some other factors as well. The retina is mainly associated with the inner lining of the back portion of the eye. It has a number of nerve endings and is imperative for seeing clearly. The most common pathology that is associated with it is retinal detachment. A detailed description of the same is given below.

What are the main causes of retinal detachment?

A retinal detachment occurs when the retina peels off from the inner portion of the eye. It is protected by a gel known as aqueous humor that lies in between the major structures. However, this gel which is vitreous in nature, can undergo shrinkage, either spontaneously or with age and result in a detachment of the retina. It is a medical condition that generally affects a single eye. Sometimes, the detachment might be very small but if not detected immediately, it can lead to loss of vision.

Since there are blood vessels nearby as well, if it gets torn due to the inward pull of the retina, it can result in bleeding. Another main reason why retinal detachment is seen is during trauma or a blow-out injury to the socket of the eye. Any injury should not be taken lightly.

What are the symptoms of retinal detachment?

Flashing of lights in front of the eyes

A partial or complete loss of vision.

Presence of floaters in front of the eyes while they are open and closed.

Lines that are supposed to appear straight start looking curved and twisted.

The eyes start to feel heavy especially when there is associated bleeding.

What are the different types of retinal detachment?

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment- it is the most commonly seen retinal detachment case. A retinal tear is seen which results in the accumulation of fluid.

Exudative retinal detachment- this type of case is seen when there is any abnormality related to the vasculature and there is the presence of an inflammation which causes the fluid to build up and put pressure.

Tractional retinal detachment- whenever there is a development of scar tissue on the retina, it undergoes contraction and this pulls the retina away from its area of attachment.

What are some additional factors that can cause retinal detachment?

Family history- there is a certain amount of genetic predisposition associated with retinal detachment.

Trauma to one eye- if there is retinal detachment seen on one eye due to some traumatic event, the retina of the other eye peels of on its own.

Diabetes- if someone has diabetes, retinopathy can be seen and this results in tears.

What are the treatments for retinal detachments?

Laser therapy- using an ophthalmoscope the laser is directed and the tissue is repaired by fusion.

Cryotherapy- is the process, freezing of the problematic tissue is done at extreme temperatures to repair it.

Scleral buckling- it is the process of sewing silicone bands on a layer called sclera which makes the outside part of the retina.

Vitrectomy- the vitreous humor inside the eye is replaced by a bubble of silicon oil to keep the retina in place.

If you are suffering from retinal detachment and want to get the surgery done from a reliable hospital, Rana Eye Hospital in Ludhiana should be an ideal choice for you. Visit their website to know more about their services.
