Relying on Windows Vista as MS lifts upgrade support on Windows XP

by John Smith Digital Marketing Expert
As users of Microsoft Windows operating systems, you are aware of Microsoft ending support for its Windows XP in April 2014. So, how does this change reflect on lay users of Windows OS? Microsoft’s official Website suggests users to either upgrade to Windows 8 or purchase a new computer!

Risking Systems:

We are all aware that software under Windows mantle has a lifecycle. This lifecycle is initiated on the release of a product into the market and ends when the product is no longer supported by the manufacturer. So, is there a problem to this?

Yes, for instance Microsoft’s withdrawal of support for some of its software portfolio would mean consumers:

· Will not receive any security updates on potential malware
· Will have to take a proactive stance to protect PCs from spyware, harmful viruses, and other ‘bad’ software malice that can be a liability on personal information.
· Need to understand that about 66 percent computers running on XP are likely to get infected with viruses
· Should know that unsupported systems are easy targets for hackers due to lack of suitable system protection devices

Being Aware:

Despite Microsoft withdrawing support; Systems running on Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 will continue to remain supported and are expected to be regularly updated for maximum protection.

It will help to:

· Know key dates in the software lifecycle to arrive at informed decisions of possible upgrades. A decision to make other viable changes to the software is a way out too.

· For example, Microsoft will stop extended support for its Windows Vista on April 11, 2017. Windows 8 users have MS support until 2023. A way out could be to devise plans to either upgrade or replace products way in advance to avoid malfunctioning of your respective systems.

As for internet browsing, Windows version 7 or 8 is suitable to run on the current Internet Explorer 11. But, those expected support for Windows Vista or XP will be limited to Internet Explorer 9. IE 9 has some security repair systems but will not benefit from improvements available in IE 10 or IE 11.
