Recovering From Liposuction - Recommendations and Tips

by Sandhya Balasubramanyan Plastic Surgeon

In research by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction lies among the top five most popular plastic surgeries. The procedure involves extracting unwanted fat from the abdomen, hips, buttocks, and thighs. The expert then shapes and contours these areas by permanently removing fat cells.

According to Dr. Sandhya Balasubramanyan, who provides the best liposuction surgery in Hyderabad, it is essential to note the limits to the fat cell volume that can be extracted safely (5 litres), especially for an outpatient operation.

What to Expect in the Post-Recovery Stages?

  • Immediately after the surgery: The doctor uses a compression garment to lay some pressure on the treated areas. Some experts use a solution containing an anesthetic to make it more comfortable for the patient initially.
  • A few hours after the surgery: In a couple of hours, the anesthesia starts wearing off, and the patient begins to feel discomfort. The intensity of the sensation depends on the area that has been treated. It is suggested to stay at the hospital overnight so the doctors can observe abnormalities.
  • Three to five days after the surgery: The patients must return to the doctor to remove the garment and check their cannula.
  • The first week and after: The cosmetic surgeon in Hyderabad may recommend the patient to massage the treated area to smoothen it out gently. After that, the patients may observe a noticeable decrease in swelling.

Top 7  Tips For Faster Recovery After Liposuction Surgery

Those considering liposuction need to know about tips and recommendations that may help them heal faster.

#1 Get Enough Rest

The doctor will recommend the ideal amount of rest the patient needs. It depends on the area treated. The patient must keep their pillows and comfortable mattresses ready to stay there comfortably. It is important to keep their mattresses clean at all times. They can use a water-resistant / rubber sheet to keep the mattress from fluid spills.

#2 Wear a Compression Garment

The patient will need to wear a compression garment after the surgery. The doctor can provide it to the patient. However, if he doesn’t, the patient can purchase it themselves. They must choose the ideal one designed for that specific area.

The doctor will put compression bandages on the surgical region after the operation, but one may also need to put on compression garments. The compression bandages and clothing aid in keeping pressure on the liposuction site, preventing bleeding, and maintaining the shapes achieved by the procedure.

One can wear the compression bandage for a few weeks and the compression garment for longer.

#3 Take Medications on Time

The doctor will prescribe certain medications, and the patient must take them on time without fail. The surgeon will prescribe antibiotics depending on the surgery.

The patients can further expect bruising after the surgery, which is normal. They may even find the treated area to look bigger than its original size before the surgery. However, this is just fluid accumulated in that area that will disappear. Wearing compression garments will help with the swelling.

#4 Keep Moving

The patients must keep moving every day. Walking is recommended. Patients must walk as much as the doctor recommends and not push it through. Not moving enough can lead to blood clots which can become fatal. Once the doctor gives the go-ahead, they can also start doing cardio.

#5 Take Care of the Stitches

To improve fluid drainage, temporary drains may be placed in the incisions. These will be removed by the doctor shortly after the procedure. One may also require stitches to close the wounds. In most cases of pure liposuction, no sutures are used.

The stitches need to be removed, or the body may be able to absorb them. The ones that dissolve do not need to be removed. Follow the doctor's instructions about these sutures.

One may need to cover their incision(s) for a couple of days and change their bandages regularly. To avoid infection, once again, strictly adhere to your doctor's directions.

#6 Watch out for the Complications

Surgeries are prone to risks. Thus, it is important to look out for any complications during recovery. For instance, if the patients feel increased swelling and pain, this may indicate that the patient has developed an infection.

Further, any green or yellow discharge accompanied by a foul smell on the treated area also signifies a locally developed infection. Likewise, if the patient gets a high fever, nausea, headache, or vomiting, these can be serious and must be shown to the doctor immediately.

#7 Stay Healthy

After the surgery, one must eat healthy meals and drink plenty of water. One must include protein in their diet to help one heal. Keep the sodium intake minimum and avoid eating junk foods like pizza, burgers, chips, and so on.
