Reasons why your blood pressure is shooting up
by James C. Working for ModatrustHigh blood pressure or hypertension is a common condition in which the long term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough and that it may eventually cause health problems such as heart disease. Blood pressure is determined both by the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries and the amount of blood your heart pumps. It has two numbers like-
● Systolic pressure
This is the upper or first number which measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats.
● Diastolic pressure
This is the
lower or second number which measures the pressure in your arteries between
beats. It is very fortunate that high blood pressure can be easily detected and
once you know about this, you can work with your doctor to control it.
The normal blood pressure in humans is less than 120/80. The systolic number in this figure is 120 and the diastolic number is 80. If your blood pressure is above the normal range, it is better if you talk to a doctor about how to lower it.
Causes of high blood pressure
The exact cause of high blood pressure is not known but several things may contribute to this including-
● Stress
Emotional anxiety and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. As time passes, excess stress can take a toll on your cardiovascular system and might lead to permanent blood pressure problems.
● Food and drink
What you drink and eat may impact your blood pressure reading. Foods high in tyramine, which is a substance found in aged foods, can lead to increase in blood pressure. This includes foods that are pickled, fermented, brined and cured. Drinks that contain caffeine can boost blood pressure numbers for the time being. Too much salt in the diet and too much alcohol consumption can also increase blood pressure levels.
● Adrenal issues
Adrenal system is responsible for hormonal production. When your hormone production is low, adrenal fatigue occurs. Therefore, your blood pressure may fall as a result. An overactive adrenal system can cause sudden spikes in hypertension and blood pressure.
● Smoking and using tobacco
Like smoking
immediately raises your blood pressure temporarily, the chemicals in tobacco
too can damage the lining of your artery walls.
Apart from
the above-mentioned factors, below are the secondary factors that are responsible
for causing high blood pressure.
● Lack of physical activity
● Family history of high blood pressure
● Sleep apnea
● Chronic kidney disease
● Older age
● Being overweight
The more you are overweight, the more you need blood to supply oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. As the amount of blood flow through your blood vessels increases, the pressure on your artery walls does so.
Two types of high blood pressure
● Essential hypertension
There is no identifiable cause of high blood pressure for most adults. This type of high blood pressure is called primary or essential hypertension that aims to develop gradually over many years.
● Secondary hypertension
Some people who have high blood pressure are caused by an underlying condition. This type of pressure is called secondary hypertension as it tends to appear suddenly and cause higher blood pressure than does primary hypertension.
Treatment
● Regularly monitoring your blood pressure
It is important to monitor your blood pressure to know how much it is increasing.
● Making healthy lifestyle changes
Healthy lifestyle practices can help you to avoid high blood pressure problems or fluctuations.
● Taking medications as prescribed
Follow your
doctor's advice and take medications as prescribed to help regulate your blood
pressure if lifestyle changes are not adequate.
