Quinceañera is a landmark in a girl's life calling for a special celebration

The very word quinceañera reminds us of fairy like young girl,entering young womanhood making it an event to be celebrated, marking the transformation of a girl to a young lady , on her fifteenth birthday. This is a Spanish word, meaning fifteen and this event is a Latin American tradition. Quinceañera is also used for the girl who is celebrating her 15^th birthday , and entering into womanhood.

This is a celebration where customs, religion and modern trends are merged. Typically a Quinceañera celebration begins with a religious ceremony and a reception is held either at home or in a banquet hall. This custom mainly focuses on God, friends and family, good food, music and dance. During this ceremony the sweet sixteen dresses gain most prominence and importance, to identify the quinceanera.

It is a common practice for the celebrant to choose special friends to be present in what is called Court of Honor. Mostly they are young siblings, or close friends. The court can consist of all girls called Damas ,all boys called Chambelanes, or can be a mix of girls and boys. The quinceañera usually wears a ball gown and her court has the traditional attire of gowns and tuxedos.
