Number 1 - always check how much experience the movers have! If you're looking at a new company, it's harder to find reviews and complaints from prior customers. However, when you go with an experienced company, there's a paper trail - you can easily find testimonials and proof of any legal disputes (but let's hope you don't!).

Number 2 - ask the moving company for references. Any business that doesn't have anything to hide will be glad to point you to previous customers and give you any proof you need of good service. If they seem dodgy... well, maybe keep looking. You can also check their reputation through the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or similar organizations.

Number 3 - make hella sure they're licensed and insured. Dealing with uninsured and unlicensed companies can be a disaster - from legal issues to full-on scams.

I will say one more thing though, keep in mind that a reputable moving company will always have questions for you. For example, they may ask what items need to be moved, whether or not you will be needing packing services, and whether your building has stairs (that costs extra, btw).
