Procedure Involved in Ankle and Foot Surgery

by Allison Guyen Foot & Ankle Institute
Ankle ligament surgery or foot ligament surgery is usually carried out to treat sprains and instability in the foot.

The ankle and foot are held together by ligaments and tendons. The ligaments on both sides of the ankle are tightly attached to the bones. Ligaments help to restrict the motion of the ankle joint. When there is an injury to the ligaments, in which they get stretched out or torn, this leads lead to a sprain. Cases which are left untreated, or in cases where many sprains happen in a short period of time, this makes the ligament weak and ankle unstable.

What Does Ankle Ligament Surgery or Foot Ligament Surgery Involve?
This type of surgery is usually carried out within a day where the patient is given a general anesthetic along with an injection around the ankle so that it’s numb and pain-free after surgery.

In some cases, the surgeon will first carry out ankle arthroscopy to inspect the joint before repairing the ligament. The procedure itself involves one incision or cut on the outside of the ankle to allow the surgeon to locate the scar tissue from the torn Ankle Ligament Surgery near the fibula bone and carry out a repair with stitches to the bone.

After Surgery
Your foot will be in a plaster cast below the knee, numb and pain-free. You will be discharged once you feel comfortable, then you will be given a follow-up appointment and painkillers if required. You will be referred to a physiotherapist who will help you to walk, without taking your full weight at first.

During Recovery
You will be asked to keep your foot elevated, above the level of your heart as much as possible to reduce swelling. You will be advised to move around only when you need to, for example, to wash or use the toilet.Your doctor might suggest that you take anti-inflammatory medication for around six weeks after surgery. Your doctor may also give you blood thinning medicine in order to rule out any blood clot formation. Once out of the cast, don’t pull at scabs but let them fall away naturally.

Risk Involved
The chance of infection is around 1% and can usually be treated with antibiotics. If you feel that your toe is numb after surgery, the nerve may be bruised but will slowly recover after some time.
