Portraits Of Leo X Cardinal Luigi De Rossi And Giulio
by Lee K. StudentIn
1513, the new Pope Leo X succeeded the throne. Like Julie II, he also invited
the famous artists to flatter him and create mural paintings. Leo X asked
Raphael to make murals for his
This
painting was finished 3 years before his death. He began in 1518 and officially
completed this painting in the second year. Three images are painted on a
vertical sitting posture with different face angles. The light is coming from
the right side and the light range is not the same to form the deep sense of
space. The main character is Pope Leo. From his scarlet shawls, red tablecloth
and books on the table, the red is gradually divided into four levels. The
image of pope is described in details: he is holding a magnifying glass to read
his manuscripts decorated with. His vision is stagnating with hands naturally
on the table.
Reportedly,
Leo X is very interested in world philosophy of humanism and usually loves to
seek the essence from classical philosophy. The bloated face of pope reveals
the tired state of mind. Raphael seems to perceive everything to thoroughly
portray the classics and philosophical thinking about the pain of contradiction.
According to the historical data, Raphael was very hpeful to pope, so that he
showed abnormal humility the pope. In 1519, Rafael said in a long letter to
Pope Leo X, "A lot of popes have your titles, but they never have your
great knowledge, courage and spirit......There are many Popes who only know the
wanton destruction of the ancient churches, statues, Triumphal Arch buildings......what
you should firstly considerate is to concern how to preserve those buildings
which are the glory of ancient homeland and the greatness of Italy.” From this passage,
we understand the reason why Raphael respects so much for this pope is that he
expects to treasure the ancient cultural relics and no longer make wanton
destruction.
Raphael
is well known for his female and Madonna paintings, and his other portraits
occupy a certain position. From the excellent portraits of characters portray, Portraits Of
Leo X Cardinal Luigi De Rossi And Giulio is the most typical. Three
characters are Pope Leo X, Cardinal Luigi De Rossi and the nephew of Pope
Giulio de Medici. Such portrait format with multiple characters appearing in a
painting makes an example for later
