by Philip Smith Inbound Marketing Manager

Just like any other natural stone, granite – the most popular stone used for creating breathtaking kitchen counters – may also be available in different surface finishes. Apparently, polished and honed are two of the common finishes for granite counters.

In this blog, we will talk about how different these two granite surface finishes are. –

Polished Granite Counter –

It has a super smooth and shiny surface. That’s because of the polish applied to the stone surface by the processing or production unit.

It is the more popular granite counter finishes. To be specific, it shine and glass like texture is achieved by buffing the stone surface with the help of mechanical and manual buffing pads.

Because of the shine and reflect, there is more light in your kitchen. Some designers use polished granite counter to create an illusion of more spaces in small kitchen project.

The stone counter is stain resistant and water resistant. And because of that, it is easier to clean and maintain. Polished granite resists bacteria, and makes a great choice for kitchen counter.

Honed Granite Counter –

Smooth and shiny, but not smoother and shinier than polished granite counter! Honed granite is often put in luxury stone category. Its satin and matte texture helps you create a rich color scheme in your kitchen.

There is no reflection on honed granite stone counter. But it is more gray and close to the definition of gray granite that the stone is known for.

To be frank, honed granite demands more care and attention from you. You cannot/shouldn’t clean this counter with the cleanser that use for cleaning polished stone surfaces. It is a porous, so stains and presence of bacteria are likely here.
