Overview

Robotic surgery or Robot-Assisted Surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that allows surgeons to perform various kinds of complex surgical procedures with more precision, flexibility, and control than conventional techniques.

Robotic surgery or Robot-Assisted Surgery integrates skills of surgeons with the world’s most advanced computer-assisted robotic surgical system, known as the Da Vinci Surgical System. This system has two separate yet connected parts referred to as tower and console, which are linked together through data cables and a computer.

The tower has four arms, out of which three are meant to hold miniaturized instruments mounted on them. These arms fitted with small tools allow surgeon maximum range, flexibility and precision while performing surgery. The fourth arm is equipped with a high-definition 3-D camera to send pictures of the area to be operated.

These robotic arms are controlled by a computer that perfectly replicates movements of operating surgeon sitting in the console. The surgeon’s master console is the robot's user interface that provides the master surgeon with:

Master manipulator, i.e., handles or joysticks through which the surgeon makes surgical movements that are translated into real-time movements of robotic arms or slave manipulators, which are docked on the patient.

These are fitted with small surgical equipment.

Motion scaling, i.e., conversion of large natural movements to ultra-precise micro-movements and tremor filtering increases the accuracy and rigor of the surgeon's movements.

A stereoscopic monitor or control panel helps adjust other functions, such as focusing on the camera, motion scaling, and accessory units.

Robot-assisted surgery or robotic surgery effectively addresses the limitations of traditional and laparoscopic surgical procedures.

The Da Vinci robotic surgery system handles with micro-articulations that can replicate motions of the human wrist, including rotation with freedom and the most considerable possible movement.
